Be Bold!

En toen was de paasvakantie alweer voorbij. Bloggen kwam er niet meer van, maar ik heb niet stil gezeten!

Na enkele keren meedraaien in het testen van de finale versie van patronen, ging ik een nieuwe uitdaging aan. Tot hiertoe hield dat testen immers in dat ik de laatste testversie naaide. Deze keer ging ik als pré-tester aan de slag. Dat ging er toch wel anders aan toe dan ik gewend was!

Ik testte mee voor het patroon ‘Be Bold’ van Ellie&Mac. Dat lijkt nogal op het ‘Be the leader’-patroon van EAM, maar met dat verschil dat er in plaats van tricot en stretchy stoffen met katoen wordt gewerkt. Ook dat was een uitdaging, want sedert ik een overlock heb, had ik eigenlijk niet meer met katoen gewerkt.

Mijn eerste versie zag er zo uit:

Samen met de andere testers was ik het erover eens dat het niet mooi doorviel, en dat het veel te breed leek. Helemaal niet flatterend, wat het wel moest zijn.

Bij de eerste versie koos ik voor een mouwloze top mét ruffle. De afwerking van de mouwaanzet deed ik met biais. Ik maakte er onderstaande foto-tutorial bij:

stap 1: plaats de biais tegen de rand van de stof, rechte kanten op elkaar. Speld vast.

stap 2: stik de biaisband vast. Volg hierbij de vouw dichtst bij de rand van de stof.

Stap 3: Vouw de biaisband om, zodat deze tegen de binnenkant van de stof komt te liggen. Speld vast.

Stap 4: Stik de biaisband vast, en volg daarbij de rand verst bij de zijkant vandaan. Probeer op ongeveer 2 à 3 mm van de rand te stikken.

Stap 5: klaar! Hieronder de foto van mijn eerste poging, zonder biais, en van de tweede poging, mét biais. Besluit: om ronde/gebogen zomen mooi af te werken, zonder valse plooitjes, is biais een leuk hulpmiddeltje! Niet moeilijk, en knap resultaat. Wanneer je contrasterend biais gebruikt, kan dit zelfs een extra meerwaarde geven aan de afwerking van jouw kledingstuk en ziet het er met weinig moeite meteen super-professioneel uit!

 

Na deze eerste testfase werd ook duidelijk dat we best gebruik maakten van heel lichte, soepelvallende katoentjes. Voor mijn volgende poging van de intussen herwerkte versie koos ik dan ook voor een jeansblauwe gauze. Deze valt heel licht en soepel, en voelt zacht aan. Ik wist het meteen toen ik de stof zag in een stoffenzaak te Ledeberg: dit was dé stof voor dit project. Mij op het lijf geschreven.

Toen er ook nog eens een bijpassende riem werd toegevoegd bij verdere bijsturing van het patroon, was het plaatje helemaal af.
Dit is het resultaat van mijn testversie: de Be-Bold-tuniek met riem en deze keer met korte mouwen en deze gewoon omgezoomd.

Er zijn nog heel wat andere mogelijkheden: een topje, een kleedje, elastiek ter hoogte van de taille om deze te accentueren, elastiek in de mouwboord, lange mouwen, zonder ruffle en dan met elastiek in de halsboord verwerkt.
Of je kiest voor de hemdversie mét knopen vooraan (of achteraan als je dit leuker vindt!)

And then Easter vacation was over. I haven’t found time to blog, but this doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy sewing!
After a few rotations in testing the final version of patterns, I took on a new challenge. Until now, testing meant that I sewed the last test version. This time I started working as a pre-tester. That was different than I was used to! I tested for the ‘Be Bold’ pattern by Ellie & Mac. This is quite similar to EAM’s ‘Be the leader’ pattern, but with that difference that it uses woven instead of knit and other stretchy fabrics. That was also a challenge for me, since I did not actually work with cotton anymore ever since I got my overlock. My first version during the test looked like this:

Together with the other testers, I agreed that it needed modifications, and that it seemed far too broad. Not at all flattering, as it was intended to be.

In the first version I chose a sleeveless top with ruffle. The finishing of the sleeves was done with biais.

Step 1: Place the biais against the edge of the fabric, straight sides together. Pin it.

Step 2: Stitch the biais binding. Follow the fold closest to the edge of the fabric.

Step 3: Fold the biais binding so that it lies against the inside of the fabric. Pin it.

Step 4: Stich the biais binding, following the edge furthest away from the side. Try to stitch about 2 to 3 mm from the edge.

Step 5: Ready! The pictures below show my first attempt, without biais, and my second attempt, with biais. Conclusion: to finish round / curved hems nicely, without false pleats, biais is a nice tool! Not difficult, and good results. When you use contrasting biais, this can even add extra value to the finish of your garment and it looks super-professional with little effort!

After this first test phase, it became clear that this pattern works best with a very light, supple cotton woven fabric. For my next attempt of the now reworked version, I opted for a blue jeans gauze. It’s very light and smooth, and feels so soft. I knew it immediately when I saw this fabric in a little fabric store in Ledeberg: it was perfect for this project.

When there was also added a matching belt with further adjustment of the pattern, the picture was completely finished.

This is the result of my test version: the Be-Bold tunic with belt and this time with short sleeves, simply hemmed (no elastic).

There are so many other possibilities with this pattern: a top, a dress, elastic at the waist to accentuate, elastic in the sleeve, long sleeves, shirt without ruffle…. Or you choose the shirt version with buttons at the front (or at the back if you like this more!)
