Het is alweer even geleden, vanwege een erg drukke periode op school, maar ik heb intussen niet stilgezeten… Hier en daar vond ik een klein “gaatje” om te naaien. Ik testte mee voor the ‘to-the-point-tunic-and-dress’ van Ellie&Mac. Gelukkig is dit een kleedje dat je in geen tijd in elkaar steekt…
It’s been a while since my last blogpost, due to busy workweeks at school, but I have been sewing whenever I found a little time… I took part in testing the new “to-the-point-dress” by Ellie and Mac. Luckily this dress is a quick sew!
Dit kleedje wijkt dankzij de hoek vooraan en achteraan af van de gewoonlijke snit, maar is even makkelijk te maken. Zo wordt een hoog-laag-effect gecreëerd. Je krijgt dus een originele jurk, die bovendien ook nog eens fantastisch zit! Je hebt de keuze tussen een aansluitend model, of een iets losser model. Ik ging voor een combinatie van beide: aansluitend bovenaan, en losser op de heupen, en drukte daarvoor enkel de laag voor maatje S af. (Dit is een pdf-patroon dat je laag per laag kan afdrukken, je drukt dus enkel af wat je nodigt hebt, geen geknoei met patroonpapier… Wel even plakken en knippen.)
This tunic and dress pattern stands out because of the squared hemline, but is a really easy sew! It creates a high-low-effect without having to sew a curved hemline. You get an original tunic or dress, that is lovely to wear! You can choose between a more fitted garment or a more relaxed one. I combined both: fitted top and relaxed at the hips. So I only had to print one layer, size S. (This is a layered pdf-pattern, allowing you to only print the size you need (or sizes if you want to blend))
Uiteraard moest ik weer net even anders gaan doen, en ging ik voor een uitdaging: ik knipte eerst een korte tuniek, en de onderste band knipte ik uit een andere stof. Ik ging dus voor een soort van subtiele colourblock en zadelde mezelf op met het aan elkaar zetten van V-vormige hoeken (met de diasweater van Misusu in gedachten, want die staat al zó lang op mijn verlanglijstje…)
Of course I had to go for a challenge: I colourblocked. I first cut out the short tunic out of my main fabric, adding a little bit of seamallowance at the bottom, and than used a contrasting fabric to cut out the rest of the dress (from the short tunic line (+ a little bit of seamallowance) to the dress-length-line.) That did mean I had the sew V-shaped corners… (having the Dia-sweater by Misusu in mind, which has been on my wish-to-make-list since forever)

Ik had intussen een stofje van Megan Blue Fabrics in gedachten voor mijn ‘finale versie’.

En effectief, ik ben reuzeblij met het resultaat. Opnieuw het kleedje, met lange mouwen en hoge neklijn.
When finished I was very pleased with the results indeed! This is, like my fit-version, the dress-length, long-sleeved version with the high neckline.
Intussen kwam vanuit de ontwerpster de vraag om een tutorial te maken over hoe ik het colourblocken had aangepakt, en vooral het naaien van de ‘V’. Ikzelf speelde intussen met het idee om een coll of kraag aan het kleedje toe te voegen. Aangezien ik toch nog een kleedje moest naaien voor het maken van de tutorial, vroeg ik of ik ineens ook een poging mocht ondernemen om er een kraag aan te zetten, geïnspireerd op de kraag van de Nivalis-jurk van Sofilantjes. Ik kreeg een ‘go’ en ging aan de slag…
In the meanwhile Lindsey Essary, designer of EAM, asked me to send her a tutorial on how I managed the V-shaped corners, so she could add this to her instructions before releasing. I myself was wondering what a cowl would look like on this dress, and since I was going to make another one to show how I colourblocked, I asked permission to try hacking a squared cowl onto the dress. I was inspired by the cowl from the Nivalisdress by Sofilantjes. Lindsay gave me a go!
De tutorial voor het naaien van de ‘V’ ziet er zo uit:
This is how I did the V-shaped corner:
Stap 1: zet een stiksel van zo’n 2,5 cm aan beide zijden van de V, zoals aangegeven op de foto hieronder.
Step 1: stitch a V, 1” each side of the corner, to secure as shown on the picture below.
Stap 2: Knip de ‘V’ aan tot bij het stiksel, waarbij je goed oplet om niet door jouw stiksel te knippen, want dit dient net om te voorkomen dat het verder kan scheuren, het zorgt voor stevigheid.
Step 2: Make a small cut, making sure not to cut the stitched you just made, as shown. The stitches make sure your fabric can’t tear, and give extra stability in the corner.
Stap 3: Leg de punten van beide stofdelen op elkaar, en zet een merktekentje. Dat geeft het beginpunt aan waar je zal starten met stikken, of waar je kan pivoteren als je liever de hele naad ineens naait. Ik naai zijde per zijde, en begin telkens op de punt naar de zijnaad toe. Ik leg dus eerst 1 zijde gelijk, en stik deze. Nadien doe ik de andere zijde. Zo probeer ik vervelende plooitjes in de hoek te voorkomen.
Step 3: Align the point of the tunic with the small cut you made and make a mark. This is the mark where you will start stitching twice, once to attach each side, or where you can pivot if attaching the band to the tunic in one move. I stitch one side at a time, both times starting in the corner, towards the side seam. Try to make sure there isn’t any puckering. This might take a little practise.
Stap 4: Strijken.
Step 4: Ironing.
Stap 5: Voor een mooie afwerking, maakte ik nog een stiksel bovenop, waarbij ik de naadwaarde vasthecht aan de bovenzijde van het kleedje. (= topstitching)
Step 5: For a neat, more sophisticated finish, I topstitched the seamallowance to the tunic.

Voor de kraag drukte ik de Nivalis-kraag maatje 164 af, en verknipte mijn stof, zodanig dat ik ook in het kraagdeel kon colourblocken. Enkel de stof van het lijfje zou immers te onopvallend zijn geweest, terwijl de contraststof net té veel zou gaan opvallen. Door beide stoffen ook in de kraag te verwerken, is het allemaal wat subtieler, maar toch weer net iets anders…
To make the Nivalis-inspired collar, I printed it size 164 and measured it against the neckline of my to-the-point-dress. I reached just the overlap I was looking for, and started cutting my fabric. Because I thought an all red collar would be to invasive and a collar in only the main fabric wouldn’t stand out, I mashed them up. This gave a more subtle look, but yet still a little extra.
Stap 1: Ik knipte twee maal een stuk van 25,5 cm lang op 23 cm hoog op de stofvouw van de zwart-witte stof en twee maal een stukje van 6,5 cm op 23 cm van de rode stof.
Step 1: I cut out two pieces (10” by 9”) on the fold out of the main fabric and two pieces (2,5” by 9”) out of the contrasting red fabric.
Stap 2: Ik naaide toen alle delen aan elkaar, afwisselend een lap zwart-witte stof aan een stukje van de rode stof, steeds met de rechte kanten op elkaar. (Op onderstaande foto’s moest ik nog een naad doen)
Step 2: I stitched all of the pieces together, alternating main and contrasting fabric, right sides together to create a loop. (In the pictures showen underneath, I still had to sew my last seam to create the loop)
Stap 3: Dan vouwde ik de stof met de rechte kant op elkaar zodanig dat er aan beide zijden de helft van de rode stof zichtbaar was en stikte de bovenzijde.
Step 3: Next step was folding the fabrics, still RST, in such a way the red fabric was folder in half and showing at both sides. I serged the top.
Stap 4: Na het locken van de bovenzijde, knipte ik de hoekjes bij en draaide de stof met de goede kant naar buiten.
Step 4: After serging, I clipped the corners and turned over the fabric, right sides on the outside.
Stap 5: Vervolgens legde ik de kraag met de ongestikte zijde tegen de neklijn, waarbij ik startte aan een van de schoudernaden. De goede kant van de kraag tegen de verkeerde kant van het kleedje. De bedoeling is dat de uiteinden overlappen. Na het vastspelden zette ik de kraag met de overlock vast. Ten slotte sloeg ik de kraag om, zodat deze aan de buitenzijde van het kleedje terecht kwam en de gelockte naad dus niet langer zichtbaar is.
Step 5: Finally I lined up the raw edge of the collar with the neckline of my dress, startingpoint at one of the shoulderseams. Right side of the collar against the wrong side of the dress. The ends of the collar should be overlapping. After pinning it, I serged it. When finished, I just flipped over the collar to the right side of the dress, this way the seam is hidden underneath the collar.
Dit is dus mijn derde versie geworden, alleen geraakte ik er niet uit: kleedje of lange tuniek/mini-dress? Wat vinden jullie?
So this is the third version I made, but I am in doubt: dress version or long tunic/mini-dress? What do you think?

In elk geval is dit een eenvoudig kleedje met een twist, dat toch heel wat mogelijkheden biedt!
Hou je het graag simpel? Dan knip je alles uit 1 en dezelfde stof, en zit je kleedje op ongeveer een half uur tot drie kwartier in elkaar.
Durf je een kleine uitdaging aan? Gebruik dan de kniplijnen voor de korte of lange tuniek om een colourblocked effect te verkrijgen. Neem zeker een kijkje bij de foto’s die ter inspiratie aan het patroon zijn toegevoegd. Voor mijn eerste versie verknipte ik ook de mouwen langs de drie-vierden-kniplijn. Wel opletten dat je dan een beetje extra naadwaarde voorziet!
In any case, this is a simple dress with a twist, which still offers a lot of possibilities!
Do you like to keep it simple? Then you cut everything out of one fabric, and your dress is put together in about half an hour to three quarters of an hour.
Are you up for a small challenge? Then use the cutting lines for the short or long tunic to obtain a color-blocked effect. Be sure to take a look at the photos that have been added to the pattern for inspiration. For my first version I also cut the sleeves along the three-quarter cutting line. Be careful that you provide a little extra seamallowance!
