The sound of music

Deze zomer reisden we naar Oostenrijk. Ik kon het dus niet laten om opnieuw hierbij passende kleedjes te naaien… Als ik Oostenrijk hoor, denk ik immers meteen aan Dirndl-jurkjes. Eerder strakke stofjes, een vierkante neklijn, een volle A-lijnrok en een schortje.

This summer we traveled to Austria. So I could not resist sewing dresses accordingly … When I hear Austria, I immediately think of Dirndl dresses. Rather sleek fabrics, a square neckline, a full A-line skirt and an apron.

Ik ging eerst aan de slag voor de jongste, en koos voor het patroon van de Siena-jurk van Little Lizard King. Deze heeft immers een vierkante neklijn, maar wel met de mogelijkheid om er via ruches vertrekkend van de taille over de schouderlijn een speels element in te steken. Ik koos voor linten die strikken op de rug en vertrekken in de taille. Naderhand zou ik wellicht kiezen om het lint te laten vertrekken vanaf het voorpand, om zo visueel nog meer het effect van de schort te kunnen creëren. Nu is dit een klein beetje onderbroken door het zijpand vooraan. Geen erg, maar de perfectioniste in mij houdt dit dus in gedachten als ik het patroon nogmaals voor deze stijl zou aanwenden…
De schort zelf maakte ik door het voorpand van het rokdeel in de contrasterende stof te knippen waarin ik ook de linten maakte, maar dit deel iets meer te fronsen. Het middenvoorpand is ook in deze contrasterende stof gemaakt.

I started with a dress for the youngest, and opted for the pattern of the Siena dress by Little Lizard King. This dress has a square neckline, but with the possibility to insert a playful element through ruffles starting from the waist over the shoulder line. I chose ribbons that tie at the back and start from the waist. Afterwards, I might choose to let the ribbon start from the front middle panel, so that I can visually create the effect of the apron. Now this is slightly interrupted by the side front panel at the front. Not a problem, but the perfectionist in me keeps this in mind if I would use the pattern for this style again …
I made the apron itself by cutting the front part of the skirt part into the contrasting fabric in which I also made the ribbons, but gathering this part a bit more. The center front panel is also made in this contrasting fabric.

Dit patroon biedt nog heel wat meer mogelijkheden, en zal ik in de toekomst wellicht nog wel vaker maken. Deze keer kostte het me behoorlijk wat tijd om het te maken, mede door het vele rimpelwerk. Op zich is het niet echt moeilijk te maken, maar door tijdsnood en een te drukke agenda was ik genoodzaakt dit kleedje verspreid over meerdere dagen te maken, waardoor het nog tijdsintensiever leek…

This pattern offers a lot more possibilities, and I will probably make it again in the future. This time it took me quite some time to make it, partly due to the gathering. In itself it is not really difficult to make, but due to time constraints and a too busy schedule I was forced to make this dress spread over several days, making it seem even more time-consuming …

De stof kocht ik bij TextilGeiger in Lienz (Oostenrijk) tijdens onze reis vorige zomer.

I bought the fabric at TextilGeiger in Lienz (Austria) during our trip last summer.

Voor mijn oudste dochter had ik geen tijd meer om dezelfde jurk nogmaals te maken. De stofjes lagen nochtans klaar… Ik viel dus terug op een kleedje dat ik onlangs maakte, en eigenlijk ook voldoet aan de kenmerken van de stijl die ik voor ogen had: de Oaklyn van Violette Field Threads. Die maakte ik een tijdje terug tijdens de SAL, en ging nu dus gewoon mee de koffer in. Met een voerschotje van de stof van het kleedje van de jongste maakte ik, volgens eigen patroon, een schortje. Dat zat heel snel in elkaar. Hierdoor matchten mijn twee dochters ook mooi bij elkaar, terwijl ze toch elk een ander kleedje droegen.

For my oldest daughter I didn’t have time to make the same dress again. The fabrics were however laying there, ready, picked out by my daughter and the pattern taped …
So I fell back on a dress I made recently, and actually also meets the characteristics of the style I had in mind: the Oaklyn from Violet Field Threads. I made it a while back during the SAL, and so we just had to pack it, ready to go. I made an apron, using my own drafted pattern, using the same fabric I made the dress of the youngest in. That was very quickly put together. As a result, my two daughters also matched nicely together, while they each wore a different dress.

Het leverde alvast mooie plaatjes op in de bergen, met een hoog ‘the sound of music-gehalte’, naast de vele complimentjes die ik er kreeg. Blije dochters, blije mama 🙂

It did produce beautiful pictures in the mountains, could have been a scene in “the sound of music”, in addition to the many compliments I received. Happy daughters, happy mom 🙂

Er werden in Oostenrijk nog wel meer kledingstukken gedragen die ik maakte… 🙂

Maar ook de Hazel Tunic and Dress van Bella Sunshine Designs kwam vaak uit de kast.

But also the Hazel Tunic and Dress by Bella Sunshine Designs was regularly worn.

En ook de regenjasjes uit softshell kwamen van pas! Het patroon dit ik hiervoor gebruikte was de Campbell Jacket van Goober Pea Designs. Die maakte ik al vorig jaar, maar ze passen nog net!

And the rain jackets from softshell also came in handy! The pattern I used for this was the Campbell Jacket from Goober Pea Designs. These I already made last year, but they still fit!

Ook de Paris Days Dress van Rebecca Page, de Haven Crop Top and Dress van Petite Stitchery en verschillende versies van de gehackte Be Bold van Ellie&Mac verschenen ten tonele, evenals de Double Down Day Dress van Little Ragamuffin. Maar ik liep natuurlijk niet non-stop met mijn camera rond… Geen foto’s hiervan dus.

The Paris Days Dress by Rebecca Page, the Haven Crop Top and Dress by Petite Stitchery and various versions of the hacked Be Bold by Ellie & Mac also appeared on the scene, as well as the Double Down Day Dress by Little Ragamuffin. But of course I didn’t walk around non-stop with my camera … So no pictures of these, or at least no good ones.

En dan nu beginnen aan kledingstukken voor komende herfst en winter! Met een hoofd vol ideeën en veel zin om eraan te beginnen. Maar eerst starten met school morgen, dat wordt toch even wennen 🙂

And now to start on garments for the coming fall and winter! With a head full of ideas and a lot of enthusiasm to get started. But first start school tomorrow, that will take some getting used to morning and evening rushes 🙂
