Ik hackte de Grow With Me PJ van Ellie&Mac om een nettere afwerking te verkrijgen, en laat jullie hier zien in woord en beeld hoe ik het heb aangepakt.
I hacked the Grow With Me PJ from Ellie & Mac to get a cleaner finish, and show you here in word and image how I tackled it.
Ik knipte eerst alle delen voor een slaapkleedje: de voor- en achterpas, het voor- en achterpand (rokdeel), de mouwen, de nekband en de ruche vooraan.
Ik knipte de achterpas twee maal. Dat hoef je normaal niet te doen, maar ik wilde graag de schoudernaden en achterpas-naad wegwerken.
First I cut all the pieces for a nightgown: the front and back yoke, the front and back panel (skirt part), the sleeves, the neck band and the ruffle at the front.
I cut the back yoke twice. You don’t normally have to do that, but I wanted to get rid of the shoulder seams and the back seam.
Hoe ging ik nu te werk?
Now how did I proceed?
Stap 1: Speld één deel van de achterpas vast op het achterpand, rechte kanten op elkaar. Gewoon zoals de handleiding van het patroon het aangeeft. Je kan deze alvast een stiksel geven zodat hij dadelijk niet gaat verschuiven.
Step 1: Pin one part of the back yoke onto the back panel, right sides together. Just as the manual indicates. You can already give it a stitching so that it will not shift during the next step.
Stap 2: Speld ook het tweede deel van de achterpas vast op het achterpand, maar deze keer met de rechte kant van de achterpas, tegen de verkeerde kant van het achterpand. De lange zijde van beide achterpassen ligt dus tegen de bovenzijde van het achterpand, waarbij het achterpand tussen beide achterpassen ligt. Naai met een rechte steek of met je overlockmachine alles aan elkaar.
Step 2: Now pin the second part of the back yoke onto the back panel, but this time with the right side of the back yoke, against the wrong side of the back panel. The long side of both back passes is therefore against the top raw edge of the back panel, the back panel being between the two back yokes. Sew everything together with a straight stitch or with your overlock machine.
Stap 3: Klap beide achterpassen naar boven, zodat deze met de verkeerde kant tegen elkaar aanliggen, en strijk de naad plat. Je kan nu de naadwaarde binnenin aan de achterpassen vastzetten door topstitching, maar dit is niet noodzakelijk.
Step 3: Fold both back yokes upwards so that they are facing each other with the wrong side, and flatten the seam. You can now attatch the seam allowance inside to the back yokes by top stitching, but this is not necessary.
Stap 4: Vanaf deze stap is het niet eenvoudig alles duidelijk te verwoorden, dus ik hoop dat de foto’s één en ander verduidelijken… Eerst en vooral leg je de voorpas met de rechte kant tegen de rechte kant van de achterpas, zodat de schoudernaden samenvallen. Ik liet de tweede achterpas hier nog naar beneden geklapt, zodat je eigenlijk normaal zou doen om voor-en achterpand aan elkaar te zetten.
Step 4: From this step it is not easy to articulate everything clearly, so I hope that the pictures clarify things … First of all you place the front yoke with the right side against the right side of the back yoke, so that the shoulder seams allign. I left the second back yoke folded down at this moment. You can pretend the inside back yoke isn’t there at this point.
Ik stikte deze naad alvast aan elkaar, zodat ze bij de volgende stap, waarbij ik ook de tweede achterpas ga vastzetten en zo de schoudernaden zal verstoppen, niet meer kunnen verschuiven.
I stitched this seam together so that in the next step, where I will also secure the second back yoke and thus hide the shoulder seams, they cannot shift.
Stap 5: Dit is een beetje tricky om uit te leggen. Je klapt de achterpas aan de binnenkant van je kledingstuk nu weer omhoog, zodat de schoudernaden samenvallen met de schoudernaden die je in de vorige stap vaststikte. We gaan nu eerst de ene schoudernaad, en dan de andere aanpakken. Ik draai de achterpas die nog los is om, omheen (niet overheen!) de reeds gestikte schoudernaad, zodanig dat de schoudernaden opnieuw samenvallen, en de nog losse achterpas met de rechte kant tegen de verkeerde kant van de voorpas aan komt te liggen. Dit stik je vast, of haal je door de overlockmachine.
Step 5: This part is a bit tricky to explain. You now fold the back yoke on the inside of your garment up again, so that the shoulder seams coincide with the shoulder seams that you stitched in the previous step. We will now first tackle one shoulder seam, and then the other. I turn the back yoke that is still loose, around (not over!) the already stitched shoulder seam, in such a way that the shoulder seams allign again, and the still loose back yoke comes to lie with the right side on the wrong side of the front yoke. You stitch this or use the overlock machine.
Je kan, als het goed is, de achterpas nu terug in zijn juiste positie brengen, en de schoudernaad zit verstopt tussen beide achterpas-delen.
You can, if all goes well, now bring the back yoke back into its correct position, and the shoulder seam is tucked between the two back yoke sections.
Dit herhaal je aan de andere kant. Je klapt dus het nog losse deel omheen de reeds gestikte schoudernaad, zodat de schoudernaden opnieuw samenvallen, waarbij de losse achterpas met de rechte kant tegen de verkeerde kant van de voorpas aanligt.
You repeat this on the other side. So you fold the second, still loose part around the already stitched shoulder seam, so that the shoulder seams allign again, with the loose back yoke with the right side against the wrong side of the front yoke.
Je kan nu opnieuw alles terug in de goede positie klappen, zodat beide schoudernaden nu zijn weggewerkt.
You can now fold everything back into the right position, so that both shoulder seams are now concealed.
Stap 6: Je merkt nu dat de binnenkant van je kledingstuk netter zal zijn afgewerkt. De naad van de achterpas en het achterpand zit netjes weggewerkt tussen beide achterpassen.
Step 6: You now notice that the inside of your garment will be nicer finished. The seam of the back yoke and the back panel is neatly concealed between the two back yokes.
En ook de schoudernaden zijn netjes weggestopt tussen beide achterpassen.
And the shoulder seams are neatly tucked away between both back yokes as well.
De rest van het kledingstuk werk je af volgens de instructies bij het patroon. Bij het inzetten van de mouwen zorg je dat de randen van de achterpassen beiden netjes samenvallen met de mouwkop, wanneer je deze vaststikt. Hetzelfde geldt bij het aanzetten van de nekboord. Let erop dat je beide achterpassen meestikt bij het aanzetten ervan.
Finish the rest of the garment according to the instructions that accompany the pattern. When inserting the sleeves, make sure that the edges of the back yokes coincide neatly with the sleeve head when you stitch it. The same applies to the neckband. Make sure you allign both back yokes when you stitch them on.
Ik vind het vooral fijn dat je kledingstuk eens het af is er een pak ‘netter’ uitziet. Ook al merk je hier aan de buitenkant niet zo veel van. Persoonlijk hou ik er wel van dat je nu aan de neklijn niet de verkeerde kant van de stof van het achterpand ziet liggen. Het zit hem in de details…
I especially like that your garment, once it is finished, looks a lot ‘cleaner’. Even if you don’t notice it that much on the outside. Personally, I like that you don’t see the wrong side of the back fabric on the neckline. It’s all in the details …
Terwijl ik toch pyjama’s naaide, maakte ik ineens een hele ‘grow-with-me-collectie’ voor deze winter. Telkens afgewerkt zoals hierboven omschreven. Mijn meiden kunnen alvast knus de winter door!
While I was at it, I have sewn a whole ‘grow-with-me’-collection for the upcoming winter. I used the method described above on all of them. My girls can cozy through the winter!
Het leukste vind ik nog steeds dat dit een gratis patroon is, met héél veel opties en bruikbaar voor zowel jongens als meisjes. Ik zou zeggen: waar wacht je nog op?

Wat ik nog kon terugvinden betreffende de stoffen die ik gebruikte:
De pyjama met het schaapje is een paneeltje van het merk Qjutie, dat ik aankocht via stoffen.net. Het is er nu jammer genoeg uitverkocht. Het slaapkleedje in lichtgrijze brushed french terry van Poppy, met gekroonde katten, kocht ik via de webshop van naaiplezier.nl. Ook deze stof is intussen echter uitverkocht. Ik vond deze ook niet meteen nog terug.
Het paneel met de eenhoorn noemde ‘unicorn dream’, maar kon ik online nergens meer terugvinden, en ik weet ook niet meer waar ik het precies kocht.
