Fall-in-Love-Sweater: the dress version

Het is alweer een hele tijd geleden dat ik de tijd vond om te bloggen. Maar dat wil niet zeggen dat ik de voorbije weken helemaal niets heb genaaid (alhoewel ook dat op een lager pitje stond).
Een van mijn meest recente naaisels is de Fall-in-love-sweater van Ellie&Mac (aff.link), maar dan gehackt tot een kleedje.
Ik hou ervan om patronen wat naar mijn hand (of lijf) te zetten, en de patronen van Ellie&Mac zijn daarvoor zeer vaak mijn vertrekpunt.

It has been a long time since I found the time to blog. But that does not mean that I have not sewn anything in recent weeks (although that was also on the back burner).
One of my most recent sews is the Fall-in-love sweater from Ellie & Mac (aff.link), hacked into a dress.
I like to bend patterns to my liking (or body), and Ellie & Mac’s patterns are often my starting point for that.

Deze hack is eigenlijk vrij eenvoudig. Ik printte het patroon in maat S en M. Knipte alle patroondelen uit, waarbij ik de S als basis nam, maar bij de heupen aanpaste naar maat M.
Dan was het tijd om stof te gaan knippen! Ik koos een French Terry van Hamburger Liebe die al een jaar op een project als dit lag te wachten. De stof kocht ik via stoffen.net.
Ik legde de patroondelen van het voorpand en achterpand op de stofvouw, maar verlengde deze beiden met 35 cm. Ik volgde hiervoor gewoon de lijnen van de zijnaad en liet deze naar de zoom toe nog lichtjes uitlopen.
Verder knipte ik nog de mouwboorden en nekboord, en de mouwen. De heupboord knipte ik niet, aangezien ik deze hier niet nodig heb.

This hack is actually quite simple. I printed the pattern in sizes S and M. Cut out all the pattern pieces, taking the S as a basis, but adjusting the hips to size M.
Then it was time to start cutting fabric! I chose a French Terry from Hamburger Liebe who had been waiting for a project like this for over a year. I bought the fabric through www.stoffen.net.
I placed the pattern pieces from the frontpanel and backpanel on the fabric fold, but extended them both by 35 cm. I just followed the lines of the side seam and let it run outwards slightly towards the seam (About 1 inch and a half wider).
I also cut the cuffs and neckband, and the sleeves. I didn’t cut the waistband, as I don’t need it here.

Dit kleedje zit ook in geen tijd in elkaar! Je volgt de gewoonlijke stappen: eerst de schoudernaden, dan de mouwen inzetten, de mouw en zijnaad stikken, nekboord en mouwboorden aanzetten en omzomen. Meer is het eigenlijk niet!
Ideaal project dus als je in minder dan een uur een draagbaar en aangenaam zittend kledingstuk wil naaien!

This dress is put together in no time! You follow the usual steps: first the shoulder seams, then the sleeves, sew the sleeve and side seam, the neckline and cuffs and hem. That’s it!
Ideal project if you want to sew a wearable and comfortable garment in less than an hour!

Ik had het patroon al wel eerder gemaakt als trui, maar ben nu helemaal verknocht aan mijn nieuwe herfstjurk…
En aangezien er weer sprake is van een lockdown, en er dus wat meer naaitijd is, knipte ik al meteen een winter-versie ook 🙂

I had made the pattern before as a sweater, but now I am completely devoted to my new autumn dress …
And since there is a lockdown again, and so there is a bit more sewing time, I immediately cut a winter version too 🙂

Daar naaide ik ook een passende haarband met twist bij. Daarvoor gebruikte ik een lap van dezelfde stof van 20,5 cm bij 51 cm. Ik bekeek dit filmpje en volgde de instructies. De haarband zat in geen tijd in elkaar en ik ben er nu al zeker van dat er nog zullen volgen 🙂

I also sewed a matching hair band with a twist, for some extra cosyness. For this I used a piece of the same fabric measuring 8″ by 20″. I watched this video and followed the instructions. The hair band was put together in no time and I am already sure that more will follow 🙂

Aureum

Na de release van de Aureum voor dames was er veel vraag naar een versie voor kinderen. Daar gaf Anne Jacobs, de ontwerpster van Sofilantjes, graag gehoor aan. De voorbije weken werd dus vlijtig getest, en nu staat ook het patroon voor meisjes helemaal op punt! Met precies dezelfde mogelijkheden als dat voor dames: maar liefst vier rug-opties, en gaande van t-shirt lengte tot maxi-jurk!

After the release of the Aureum for women, there was a great demand for a version for children. Anne Jacobs, the designer of Sofilantjes, gladly responded to that. The past few weeks it has been rigorously tested, and now the pattern for girls is also perfect! With exactly the same options as for women: no less than four back options, and ranging from t-shirt length to maxi dress!

De eerste was deze met de heerlijke zomerse streepjes die ik onlangs ook al gebruikte voor een Solis voor zus. Nu kunnen ze dus twinnen in Sofilantjes-kleren 🙂

TFirst up was the one with the lovely summery stripes that I recently used for a Solis for little sister. Now they can twin in Sofilantjes clothes 🙂

Ik ging ook aan de slag met een paneeltje uit de Qjutie Kids Collection, en werkte de rug deze keer af met sierband. Hoewel ik het resultaat heel tof vind, heeft het naar mijn gevoel eerder een pyjama-uitstraling. Met een passend bijhorend broekje werd deze dus omgedoopt naar zomers pyjamaatje 🙂

I also went to work with a panel from the Qjutie Kids Collection, and this time finished the back with a decorative band. Although I think the result is very cool, I feel it has a pajama look. With appropriate matching pants, this was renamed summer pajama 🙂

Na dit setje belandden we in het vlinderthema 🙂

After this set we ended up in the butterfly theme 🙂

Een ding is zeker: hier zullen er nog van volgen! Zus bestelde er al eentje, en ze willen allebei ook graag een maxi-versie. Nu nog tijd vinden…

One thing is certain: more will follow! Sister already ordered one, and they both also want a maxi version. Now to find time …

Double Down Day Dress

De Double Down Day Dress van Little Ragamuffin blijft één van mijn favo kleedjes, omwille van de prinsessennaden (en ik moet toegeven, de juf in mij vindt die alliteratie in de benaming ook geweldig… 🙂 )
Het was alweer een hele tijd geleden dat ik er eens eentje maakte, dus toen de fleurige stof met bloemenstroken op een zwarte achtergrond van Znok aankwam, haalde ik dit patroon nog eens uit de kast. Al moet ik toegeven dat ik deze keer wel even zat te puzzelen en twijfelen. Hoe kon ik die mooie bloemenstroken best tot hun recht laten komen? Ik twijfelde een hele tijd of ik het volledige kleedje uit deze stof zou halen, of enkel het voor- en achterpand en dan combineren met zwarte zijpanelen. Uiteindelijk hakte ik de knoop door een waagde een gokje: Ik knipte het hele kleedje, behalve de kapmouwtjes, uit de mooie VINDLA stof.

The Double Down Day Dress from Little Ragamuffin remains one of my favorite dresses, because of the princess seams (and I must admit, the teacher in me also loves that alliteration in the name … :))
It had been a long time since I made one, so when the jersey with colourful floral strips on a black background from Znok arrived, I pulled this pattern out again. Although I must admit that this time I was puzzling and doubting. How could I best show off those beautiful flower strips? I doubted for a long time whether I would get the full dress out of this fabric, or just the front and back panels and then combine with black side panels. Finally I tied the knot by making a guess: I cut the whole dress, except the cap sleeves, from the beautiful VINDLA fabric.

Telkens grijp ik bij dit patroon naar die kapmouwtjes, en telkens opnieuw knoei ik ermee… Ik moet die handleiding er toch nog eens opnieuw bijnemen en ze misschien ook eens effectief volgen, wie weet, lukt het dan beter? Of misschien zijn er wel mensen die mij een geschikte video op youtube kunnen aanraden met een duidelijke handleiding? Tips zijn zeker welkom!
Ik vraag me telkens af of ik de enige ben, of er misschien nog naaisters zijn die er bij dit patroon niet helemaal aan uit geraken, bij die mouwtjes?

Every time, I reach for these cap sleeves with this pattern, and every time I mess with it … I have to take that manual again and maybe follow it effectively, who knows, will it work better? Or maybe there are people who can recommend a suitable video on YouTube with a clear manual? Tips are certainly welcome!
I keep wondering if I’m the only one, if there are any seamstresses who can’t quite get it out with this pattern, with those sleeves?

In elk geval eindigde ik gelukkig wel met een geslaagde outfit. Dit maal koos ik voor de dieper uitgesneden halslijn.
Ik ben blij dat deze niet té diep is, maar toch blijft het wat wennen. Volgende keer maak ik wellicht toch maar weer de minder diep uitgesneden halslijn, denk ik…
Ik maakte het kleedje met lengte tot op de knie. Dit is maatje S.

I am glad that it is not too deep, but it still takes some getting used to. Next time I may make the less deep cut neckline again, I think …

Peppermint Swirl/Strawberry Laces Mash-up

De Peppermint Swirl Dress van Candy Castle Patterns sprak al een hele tijd tot mijn verbeelding. Maar het naaien bleef ik uitstellen, omdat het er behoorlijk tijdsintensief uitzag. Een ander Candy Castle patroon dat ik al een tijdje in de gaten had, is de Strawberry Laces Lace-Up Dress, vanwege de mooie, zomerse afwerking op de rug. En toen kwam er, midden in de corona-lockdown, een oproep voor testers om de handleiding voor een mash-up van deze jurken uit te proberen. Het beste van twee werelden: de prachtige zwierrok van de Peppermint Swirl, met de oogverblindende rug van de Strawberry Lace. Ik kon het niet laten… Ik moest het eindelijk eens maken!

The Peppermint Swirl Dress from Candy Castle Patterns appealed to my imagination for a long time. But I kept procrastinating because it looked quite time-consuming. Another Candy Castle pattern that I have been aware of for a while is the Strawberry Laces Lace-Up Dress, because of the beautiful, summery finish on the back. And then, right in the middle of the corona lockdown, a call came for testers to try out the mash-up guide to these dresses. The best of both worlds: the beautiful petticoat of the Peppermint Swirl, with the dazzling back of the Strawberry Lace. I couldn’t resist … I finally had to make it!

De Peppermint Swirl is een echte blikvanger, ik zag tot op heden nog geen enkel patroon dat het effect van deze zwierrok benadert. Maar mijn vermoeden was ook helemaal waar: dit is niet een patroon dat je even gauw in elkaar stikt… Vooral het knippen kostte heel wat tijd! En stof.
Maar eens je begint te naaien, en je langzaam aan die rok ziet tevoorschijn komen, vergeet je het labeur van het knippen… 😉
Weetje: ik werkte de zoom van de rok af met lusjesband. Maar liefst 9 meter!

The Peppermint Swirl is a real eye-catcher, I have not yet seen a single pattern that approaches the effect of this skirt. But my suspicion was also completely true: this is not a pattern that you stitch together quickly … Especially the cutting took a lot of time! And a lot of fabric.
But once you start sewing, and you slowly see that skirt emerge, you forget the work you had on cutting it …;)
Fact: I finished the hem of the skirt with loop band. No less than 9 meters!

Het bovenlijfje van de Strawberry lace is eenvoudig te naaien. Waar hier het meeste tijd in kroop, was het strijkwerk voor de linten. Maar dat kan je in feite omzeilen door te werken met voorgevormd biais…

The top of the Strawberry lace is easy to sew. The most time that crept in here was the ironing for the ties. But you can actually get around that by working with store-bought bias …

Het resultaat mag er echt wel zijn! Mijn dochter voelde zich meteen een echte prinses in deze jurk! En uiteraard wil de jongste er nu ook eentje… 🙂

The result is really there! My daughter immediately felt like a real princess in this dress! And of course the youngest now wants one … 🙂

De patronen van beide jurken bestaan reeds, en nu komt er dus een handleiding om beide te combineren.
Dat betekent wel dat je beide patronen moet aanschaffen. Ze zijn elk op zich zeker de moeite waard, en de handleiding voor de mash-up is een extra meerwaarde.

The patterns of both dresses already exist, so now there is a manual to combine both.
That means you have to buy both patterns. Each one is worthwhile in itself, and the manual for the mash-up is an added value.

Ik denk er nu over om de voorkant van het bovenlijfje van de Peppermint Swirl te combineren met het rugdetail van de Strawberry Lace. Wat denken jullie: proberen?

Sleepwear

Nu het zomer wordt, was het tijd voor aangepaste nachtkleding voor mijn dochters, dus ging ik aan de slag met een toffe nieuwe stof van ZNOK designs: Bokisar by FraMia. Ik combineerde met een zachte, soepel vallende tricot in zalmroze en donkerblauw. Maar ook met een streepje wit.

Now that summer is coming, it was time for my daughters to wear custom nightwear, so I started working on it with a great new fabric from ZNOK designs: Bokisar by FraMia. I combined with a soft, supple jersey in salmon pink and dark blue. But also with a dash of white.

Set 1: Starry nig ht pj’s – Sofiona Designs

Dit patroon stond al maanden op mijn verlanglijstje! Een patroon met veel mogelijkheden, daar hou ik wel van. Je kan het immers eenvoudig houden, maar je kan ook all-the-way gaan met ruches. Persoonlijk vind ik dat ruches een speels en vrouwelijk effect hebben, en dus ging ik all-the-way 🙂
Daarnaast kan je ook leuk gaan colour blocken, nog een plus.
En wat het helemaal af maakt, is het feit dat je een pyjama of nachtkleedje kan maken. Dat is wat mij betreft de kers op de taart, want ik vind het leuk om mijn meisjes te laten twinnen, maar wil niet dat ze exact hetzelfde dragen.
Bovendien mouwloos, en dus heerlijk wanneer het warm is!

This pattern has been on my wish list for months! A pattern with many possibilities, that’s what I like. After all, you can keep it simple, but you can also go all-the-way with ruffles. Personally, I think ruffles have a playful and feminine effect, so I went all-the-way 🙂
You can also have fun color blocking, another plus.
And what makes it complete is the fact that you can make pajamas or a nightgown. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the icing on the cake, because I like having my girls twinning, but don’t want them to wear the exact same thing.
In addition, sleeveless, so great when it’s hot!

Voor de jongste maakte ik een nachtkleedje, met ruches onderaan. Wat ze er zelf het leukst aan vindt? Dat het bijna tot op haar enkels valt! Ik maakte maat 6 jaar, verlengd tot 7 jaar.
Voor de oudste ging ik dan weer voor de pyjama-versie. Maar ook hier met ruches aan de broekspijpen. Voor haar maakte ik maat 8 jaar.

For the youngest I made a nightgown with ruffles at the bottom. What she likes most about it? That it almost falls to her ankles! I made size 6 years, extended to 7 years.
For the oldest I went for the pajama version. But also here with ruffles on the legs. For her I made size 8 years.

Zeg nu zelf: ze stralen in hun nieuwe pyjama-set, toch?

Now say for yourself: they shine in their new pajama set, right?

Set 2: Grow-with-me pj’s – Ellie&Mac (aff.link)

Door het combineren met uni-stoffen, hield ik nog voldoende over voor een tweede set. Deze keer ging ik aan de slag met de Grow-with-me van Ellie&Mac. Een gratis patroon dat heel wat opties biedt. Eigenlijk vergelijkbaar qua opties met bovenstaand patroon, alleen met mouwen en zonder ruches onderaan.
Maar ook hier kan je dus spelen met verschillende stoffen, en is er zowel een slaapkleedje als pyjama beschikbaar.

By combining with plain fabrics, I still had enough for a second set. This time I went to work with the Grow-with-me pajamas from Ellie & Mac. A free pattern that offers a lot of options as well. Actually similar in terms of options with the above pattern, only with sleeves and without ruffles at the bottom.
But here you can also play with different fabrics, and there is both a sleeping dress and pajamas available.

Voor de jongste maakte ik ook hier maat 6 jaar, verlengd tot 7 jaar. Voor de oudste maat 8 jaar, verlengd tot 9 jaar.
Het enige wat ik aanpaste, was de lengte van de broekspijpen en de mouwen. Ik korte beiden in.
Bij dit patroon is het broekje meer aansluitend.
Wie wil, kan er vrij eenvoudig zelf een ruche bijmaken. Ik hield het hier echter gewoon bij de patroondelen zoals ze voorzien zijn.
Bij dit patroon is er dan wel weer een faux-placket voorzien, met ruche.
Ook de combinatie met wit is tof.

For the youngest I also made size 6 years here, extended to 7 years. For the oldest size 8 years, extended to 9 years.
All I adjusted was the length of the trouser legs and the sleeves. I shortened both.
The pants are more fitting with this pattern.
If you want, you can easily create a ruffle yourself. However, I just made them as they are provided.
In this pattern there is a faux-placket with a placket ruffle to embellish the shirt.
The combination with white for the bodice ruffle also works great.

In elk geval zijn de meisjes en ik helemaal verliefd op deze twee sets!

In any case, the girls and I are completely in love with these two sets!

Whitney

Het was alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik eens deelnam aan een test voor Athina Kakou van AK patterns.
Deze keer testte ik mee voor de Whitney Top & Dress. Het is een wikkeltop – of kleedje, maar net even anders door de mooie geschulpte rand in de neklijn.
Deze geschulpte rand geeft dit kleedje een aparte, geraffineerde look and feel.
Het patroon is bedoeld voor rekbare stoffen, ik gebruikte tricot.

It had been a while since I took part in a test for Athina Kakou of AK patterns.
This time I tested for the Whitney Top & Dress. It is a wrap top or dress, but slightly different because of the beautiful scalloped edge in the neckline.
This scalloped edge gives this dress a distinct, sophisticated look and feel.
The pattern is meant for stretchy fabrics, I used jersey.

Het mooie aan dit patroon is dat het is opgemaakt met verschillende cupmaten, zodat je geen aanpassingen meer hoeft te doen indien je een kleinere of grotere cupmaat hebt dan gemiddeld. In de handleiding lees je hoe je eenvoudig kan bepalen welke cupmaat bij jou past, en nadien ga je in de tabel bij de juiste cupmaat op zoek naar de maat/maten die je gaat printen. Het pdf-patroon is gelaagd, zodat je enkel afdrukt wat je nodig hebt.
Het afdrukken van enkel de laag die je nodig hebt is hier wel zeker aan te raden, want zo niet is het haast onmogelijk om de patroondelen van de geschulpte neklijn deftig uit te knippen!

The great thing about this pattern is that it is made up with different cup sizes, so you don’t have to make any adjustments if you have a smaller or larger cup size than average. In the manual you can read how you can easily determine which cup size suits you, and afterwards you look for the correct size / sizes that you will need to print. The PDF pattern is layered so you only print the sizes you need.
Printing only the layer that you need is definitely recommended here, because if not it is almost impossible to cut out the pattern parts of the scalloped neckline in a decent way!

In de testgroep knipten we eerst de patroondelen, en nadien de stof, zoals je gewoonlijk zou doen. Voor de geschulpte rand is dat een werkje dat wat meer tijd vraagt. Tot het idee werd geopperd om de geschulpte rand niet vooraf te knippen en het patroondeel dus eerst als rechte strook uit de stof te knippen. Wanneer je nadien de geschulpte rand overneemt op de verkeerde kant van de stof, en dan erlangs stikt, knip je achteraf de naadwaarde bij en dat gaat een pak vlotter! Dus dat is een tip van een van de mede-testers die ik jullie graag wil meegeven!

In the test group, we first cut the pattern pieces, and then the fabric, as you normally would. For the scalloped edge, this is a job that takes a little more time and effort. It was suggested that the scalloped edge should not be cut in advance, so that it should first be cut from the fabric as a straight strip. Afterwards you take over the scalloped edge on the wrong side of the fabric, and then stitch along it. When you trim the seam value afterwards, it works a lot smoother! So that’s a tip from one of the co-testers I’d like to share with you!

Ik deed zelf ook nog een kleine aanpassing. Ik liet namelijk de binnenste striklinten weg, en verving dit door drukknoopjes waar normaal de striklinten komen. Wanneer je de striklinten immers uit dezelfde stof maakt als de rest van jouw kledingstuk, krijg je een ‘ophoping’ in de zijnaad, zodat het lijkt dat je een bult hebt waar de strik binnenin zit. Wanneer je lint gebruikt, valt dit niet op, en kan je dus gewoon het patroon volgen. Of je laat het, zoals ik weg en vervangt door drukknopen, dat kan ook 🙂

I also made a small adjustment myself. I left out the inner ties, and replaced this with snaps where the ribbons normally go. After all, if you make the tie ribbons from the same fabric as the rest of your garment, you will get a ‘build-up’ in the side seam, so that it looks like you have a bump with the bow inside. When you use ribbon, this is not noticeable, so you can just follow the pattern. Or you leave it out, like me, and replace it with snaps 🙂

Je kan de top of het kleedje maken in verschillende mouwlengtes.
Athina heeft ook nog heel wat ‘hacks’ op de planning staan, dus hou haar website in de gaten! Onder andere een niet-geschulpte neklijn, een faux-wrap en het doortrekken van de geschulpte rand in het rokdeel kunnen bijkomende opties zijn! Of je maakt er een crop-top van zonder de rokdelen toe te voegen? Of je maakt er een maxi van door net lengte aan de rokdelen toe te voegen: je ziet, opties genoeg om je eigen creativiteit de vrije loop te laten!

Among other things, a non-scalloped neckline, a faux wrap and the pull-through of the scalloped edge in the skirt part can be additional options! Or make it a crop top without adding the skirt parts? Or you can make it a maxi by adding length to the skirt parts: as you can see, options enough to let your own creativity run free!

Aarhus

Wellicht heb je net als ik zoiets als “Aarhus? Hoe kwam de ontwerper van Little Lizard King aan die naam???”.
Hun patroonnamen zijn eigenlijk steeds gelinkt aan steden. Dus ook Aarhus is een plek op onze wereldbol, meer bepaald in Denemarken. Ik was eigenlijk wel benieuwd naar Aarhus, dus heb ik even wat afbeeldingen gezocht. Wel een bezoekje waard, lijkt mij 🙂
Althans, eens corona het toelaat…
Maar kijk, zo is naaien toch ook een klein beetje reizen 🙂

Maybe you thinking “Aarhus? How did the designer of Little Lizard King get that name ???”
Their pattern names are actually always linked to cities. So Aarhus is also a place on our globe, more specifically in Denmark. I was actually curious about Aarhus, so I looked for some pictures. Well worth a visit, I think 🙂
At least, once corona allows it …

Natuurlijk wil ik jullie vooral het patroon zelf laten zien. Ik maakte twee versies, een sobere en een feestelijker versie.
Ik laat ze jullie dadelijk beiden zien, met de nodige uitleg bij. Ik maakte telkens maat 7 jaar, verlengd tot maat 8 jaar.
Net zoals alle patronen van Little Lizard King, beschikt ook Aarhus over een uitgebreide en makkelijk te volgen handleiding (wel in het Engels natuurlijk), waar bij elke stap ook foto’s voorzien zijn, en waar nodig ook links naar filmpjes. De tabel om te kijken hoeveel stof je zal nodig hebben, alsook de tabel om te bepalen welke maat je moet gaan maken, is zowel in inches als in centimeter beschikbaar.

Of course I especially want to show you the pattern itself. I made two versions, a sober and a more festive version.
I’ll show you both in a minute, with the necessary explanation. I made size 7 years, lengthened to size 8 years.
Like all Little Lizard King patterns, Aarhus also has an extensive and easy-to-follow manual (in English of course), with photos at each step, and links to videos where necessary. The table to see how much fabric you will need, as well as the table to determine which size to make, is available in both inches and centimeters.

Het patroon voorziet heel wat mogelijkheden:
* het lijfje kan je eenvoudig maken, of met prinsessennaden voorin. De blikvanger is evenwel het achterpand, met de vierkante halsuitsnijding en corset-look.
* de mouwen zijn ingezet, en je kan kiezen voor driekwartsmouwen met gewone zoom, of je voegt er de wijder uitlopende mouw aan toe, al dan niet met een extra ruche aan de mouwband en een strikje.
* als rokdeel kan je kiezen voor een aangerimpelde rok, een cirkelrok of een dubbele cirkelrok en er is extra info voorzien in het patroon om te werken met een verstevigde zoom (horsehair braid = crinolineband) en hoe je alles nog kan ‘opfleuren’ met tulle. Deze lagen kan je ook nog gaan combineren.

Het patroon gaat van 12 maanden tot 14 jaar.

The pattern provides many possibilities:

you can make the bodice simple, or with princess seams in the front. The eye-catcher, however, is the back, with the square neckline and corset-look backdetail.
the sleeves are set in, and you can choose three-quarter sleeves with a regular hem, or you can add the wider flared bellsleeve, with or without an extra miniruffle on the sleeve band and an optional bow.
as skirt part you can choose a pleated skirt, a circle skirt or a double circle skirt and extra information is provided in the pattern to work with a reinforced hem (horsehair braid = crinoline ribbon) and how you can ‘brighten up’ everything with tulle . You can also combine these layers.

It’s available in sizes 12 months up to 14 years.

Versie 1: eenvoudige drie-kwartsmouw, lijfje met prinsessennaden, aangerimpelde rok.

Ik hoor je denken “Dubbele cirkelrok, dat is dus ook veel zoom…” Het antwoord is uiteraard ja. Maar het is dat extra zoomwerk zó waard! Het zorgt ervoor dat dit kleedje een heel mooie volumineuze rok heeft, wat alles nog net wat extra feestelijk maakt.

I can hear you think “Double circle skirt, so that’s a lot of hem …” The answer is of course yes. But it is so worth that extra hem-work! It ensures that this dress has a very nice voluminous skirt, which makes everything that little bit extra festive.

Nu nog een patroon vinden (of zelf tekenen) dat kan dienen om als (mouwloos) gilet over dit kleedje heen te dragen voor wanneer het wat frisser wordt… Ideetjes welkom!

Now find a pattern (or draw it yourself) that can serve as a (sleeveless) waistcoat over this dress for when it gets a bit chilly … Ideas welcome!

LLK Hudson

De herfst is in aantocht. We genieten nog van de laatste zonnestralen, maar wind en regen zijn in het vooruitzicht. Hoog tijd dus om aan de herfst/wintergarderobe te beginnen! (Ja, ik begin daar steeds last-minute aan, een deadline, dat werkt voor mij 🙂 )

Autumn is approaching. We still enjoy the last rays of the sun, but wind and rain are in prospect. So it’s time to start working on an autumn / winter wardrobe! (Yes, I always start last minute, a deadline, that’s what works for me :))

De Hudson Cardigan is het nieuwste patroon van Little Lizard King, en kwam zowel voor meisjes als dames uit. Heel leuk dus om mams-en-ik-setjes te gaan maken. Het patroon kwam samen met de Joliette Skirt uit, en die twee zijn een superhippe match, helemaal volgens de trends van het komende seizoen!
Zelf had ik nog niet de tijd om met het rokpatroon aan de slag te gaan, maar ik naaide wel vier Hudson Cardigans, die ik hier graag even laat zien.

The Hudson Cardigan is Little Lizard King’s newest pattern, and was released for both girls and women. So very nice to make mum-and-me sets. The pattern came out together with the Joliette Skirt, and those two are a super hip match, completely according to the trends of the coming season!
I didn’t have the time to get started with the skirt pattern myself, but I did sew four Hudson Cardigans, which I would like to show here.

Hudson voor dames/Hudson for women

Voor mezelf naaide ik eerst een Cardigan met bishop-sleeves. Ik ben helemaal fan van dit soort mouwen! De afhangende schoudernaad zorgt voor een lossere cardigan, die er lichtjes oversized uitziet, en heerlijk comfy is om dragen. Je kan ook voor een normale mouw met mouwband gaan. En het patroon voorziet zakken! Joepie!
De stof, een zachte tricot, had ik al jaren in mijn voorraad liggen. Jammer genoeg kon ik niet meer achterhalen waar ik deze vandaan haalde…

First I sewed a cardigan with bishop sleeves for myself. I am a big fan of these kind of sleeves! The dropped shoulder seam creates a looser cardigan that looks slightly oversized and is wonderfully comfy to wear. You can also go for a normal sleeve with a sleeve band. And the pattern provides for pockets! Hooray!
I had the fabric, a soft jersey, in my stock for years. Unfortunately I couldn’t find out where I got these from …

Vervolgens maakte ik ook een tweede versie, maar deze keer in “duster”lengte (tot net boven de enkel) en in een stretch-kant die ik vond in de webshop van Driessen. Daardoor krijgt hij een heel andere, romantische vibe. In de zijnaden naaide ik een split, wat in het patroon ook voorzien is.

For my second version, I had a different vision. I chose to make it “duster” length (just above the ankle) and in a stretch lace that I found in the Driessen webshop. This gives it a completely different, romantic vibe. I sewed a vent in the side seams, which is also provided in the pattern.

Hier combineerde ik met de Glastonbury top en rok, ook al een heerlijk Little Lizard King-patroon.

Ik naaide beide versies in maat 6, aangepast naar maat 8 ter hoogte van de heup. De mouwen zijn trouwens ook heel leuk als je de mouwband er niet aanzet, en gewoon omzoomt. Hier hield ik me aan het patroon, maar twijfel nog steeds of ik de boorden er opnieuw zou afhalen en de mouwen laat uitwaaieren. Wat zouden jullie doen?

I sewed both versions of Hudson in size 6, adjusted to size 8 at hip height. The sleeves are also very nice if you don’t put the sleeve band on, and just hem them. Here I stuck to the pattern, but still doubt whether I would take the cuffs off again and let the sleeves fan out. What would you do?

Hudson voor meisjes/Hudson for Girls

Ik zei het al, dit patroon is er ook voor meisjes. Dus maakte ik maat 8 jaar voor Laure. Zij verkoos de aansluitende mouwen, en cardigan-lengte (“want anders kan ik er geen jas overheen, als dat er zo onderuit hangt, vind ik het niet mooi.”) Intussen leerde ik dat ik me maar beter aan de wensen van mijn bijna-tiener hou… 🙂
Waar ze vroeger maar al te graag fotomodel-allures bovenhaalde bij een fotoshoot, was ook dat deze keer geen sinecure… Wie tips heeft om puberende meisjes te overtuigen even mee te werken, zonder schermtijd: ze zijn meer dan welkom 🙂
De eerste versie in een framboosroze ribtricot viel alvast wel heel erg in de smaak, oef! De zakken haalde ik er wel af, want aangezien ik niet het juiste voetje heb op mijn machine, waren die heel hobbelig en bobbelig… De stof heb ik vorig jaar aangeschaft via Stoffen.net.

As I said, this pattern is also available for girls. So I made size 8 years for Laure. She preferred the fitted sleeves and cardigan length (“because otherwise I can’t wear a coat over it, if it hangs out like that, I don’t like it.”) In the meantime I learned that I better take into account my pre-teens wishes … 🙂
Where in the past she was only too happy to bring out fashion model allures at a photoshoot, that was also no easy task this time … Anyone who has tips to convince teenager girls to participate, without screen time: they are more than welcome 🙂
The first version in a raspberry pink rib knit was certainly very popular, phew! I did take the pockets off, because since I don’t have the right foot on my machine, they were very bumpy and lumpy … The fabric was purchased last year via Stoffen.net.

En tenslotte ook voor haar nog een tweede, in een super-toffe zigzag stretch-kant, bohemian style.
De stof haalde ik bij Driessen en naaide gelukkig een pak makkelijker dan de stretch-kant voor mijn duster. Ik slaagde er zelfs in om de zigzag-streepjes te matchen, jeej!
Deze keer mét zakken natuurlijk.

And finally for her also a second Hudson, in a super cool zigzag stretch lace, bohemian style.
I got the fabric from Driessen and luckily it was a lot easier to work with than the stretch lace for my duster. I even managed to match the zigzag dashes, yeey!
This time with pockets of course.

How to use the Oasis Swimsuit top to create a maxidress

So, a couple of weeks ago, I was scrolling through some webshops, and encountered a dress I just had to try and recreate… I just knew there would be an Ellie&Mac pattern that I could use as a base. Someone in the Ellie&Mac Facebook Group brought the Oasis Swimsuit to my attention. It was the perfect starting point to make my pinspiration come true!

I printed the Oasis Swimsuit bodice, style 1, size SM and first made a muslin.
For the skirt I added approx. 38″ in length. For the first tier, I drew two rectangles of 9″ 7/8 by 27″1/2.
For the middle tier, I drew three rectangles of 13″6/8 by 27″1/2. For the last tier, I have cut four rectangles of 16″ by 27″1/2.
After trying on my muslin, I noticed the weight of the skirt was pulling everything down. So for my final attempt, I adjusted the pattern pieces just a smidge, as you can see on the pictures below. I lengthened the side seam, so the bodice comes up a little higher on the sides. I added 1″ on the front bodice, and 1/2″ on the side seam of the back bodice.

Constructing the bodice

To construct the bodice, I have cut out the front bodice twice, as you are supposed to. I wanted it to be fully lined, to give it more stability and coverage, and to get a clean finish on the strap bands. So I cut out the back bodice twice (mirrored), instead of only once. I also cut out the style 1 neckband and the two straps that wrap around your body.
I have not cut out the hem binding, since I was attatching a skirt.

You first sew gathering stitches on the side seam of the front bodice. So I did on both front bodice pieces. I gathered the sides to match the back bodice parts. Then I attached the back bodice parts to both of my front bodice parts, creating to identical pieces.

I placed those pieces on top of each other, right sides together, to stitch the sloping sides together, that will go under the armpit.
After doing so, I have sewn the loops (4 of them, each 2″ by 3″).
I folded my bodice open, and placed the loops on the marks I had made. Then folded the bodice pieces back, right sides together, so the loops were sandwiched in between. I did a stay-stitch and then stitched the sides together.
I turned the bodice inside out.

Time to attach the neck binding!

And on to the last part of the bodice construction: the straps. I used the straps, as the manual says, to create the third loop. You use the binding method again to create the straps.

Creating the skirt

To create the skirt, you first sew the two top tiers together along the short sides, to create a continuous loop.
You do the same for the three middle tier pieces, and repeat your actions with the four pieces of the bottom tier.

Next I hemmed the bottom tier. Then I sewed gathering threads at the top of that tier. I gathered it to match the length of the middle tier, and I sewed the bottom tier to the middle one. Now you sew gathering threads on top of the middle tier, gather it to match the top tier, and sew those together as well.

At the top of the top tier I sewed an elastic band. I cut that elastic 1/2″ shorter than my waist measurements, and overlapped another 1″. This so that the elastic can support the weight of the skirt part. I divided the elastic into four equal parts, and did the same with the skirt part. Then I sewed the elastic into the skirt with a zigzag stitch, which also gathered the last top layer.

Attatching the bodice and skirt

To attatch the bodice to the skirt, I marked the middle of the front bodice, as well as the middle of the skirt.
I aligned the raw edge of the bodice with the raw edge of the skirt, laying them right sides together.
Without stretching, I now pinned the rest of the bodice to the skirt. Your bodice will not be pinned all around the skirt, there will be a part of the skirts raw edge still visible. I used my serger the sew all around the skirt opening, whilst attatching the bodice to it.

Now to get rid of that raw edge on the back and finish my dress!
I pulled the bodice up, now showing how the dress will look on front. I folded the seam allowance down, and pinned it all around the skirt opening. All I now had to do, was stitch it secure with a zigzag stitch. On the front, this helps for extra stability, and on the back, you this way get a clean finish.

Et voila: I made my pinspiration come true, thanks to Ellie&Mac 🙂
An additional advantage of the Oasis Swimsuit pattern is that you can easily add padding to the bodice (it’s all in the manual!), because the open back does not really go well with a bra of course…

I love this dress, although I have no occasion to wear it to…
But I now have it ready and waiting for action 🙂

Tekapo

Nog een test waarin ik meedraaide bij Little Lizard King: de Tekapo dress. Leuk weetje: de naam is afkomstig van het Tekapo-meer in Nieuw-Zeeland. Denk aan een prachtig weelderig landschap, en geef dit weer met effen stoffen, pastelkleuren en zachte bloemenprints. Het kleedje is bedoeld voor katoentjes.

Antoher Little Lizard King testing I took part in: the Tekapo Dress. Tekapo is named after Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. Think beautiful lush scenery, solid colour fabrics or soft florals.

Tekapo heeft een V-hals met een smalle of brede ruche langs de halslijn. De verschillende mouwopties maken het ideaal voor elk seizoen!

Het meisjespatroon bevat de volgende opties:

• halve of volledige knoopsluiting

• eenvoudige zoom of ruches

• top of jurk lengte

• mouwloos, korte mouwen of lange mouwen

• brede of smalle ruche langs de neklijn.

Tekapo features a V neck with a unique small or large bodice ruffle. The various sleeve options make it ideal for any season!

The girls pattern includes the following options:

• half or full button down closure

• simple or ruffle hem

• top or dress length

• sleeveless, short sleeves or long sleeves

• large or small bodice ruffle

Voor mijn eerste versie koos ik een double gauze van stoffen.net. Lekker luchtig, los geweven en ik was benieuwd naar hoe dit patroon zou werken met streepjes. Iets zei me dat dit best wel eens een leuk effect zou kunnen geven. Voor deze eerste versie koos ik ervoor enkel een knoopssluiting te voorzien voor het lijfje, en dus niet voor het rokdeel (want ja, knoopsgaten…). Ik ging voor een mouwloos modelletje met een smalle ruche in de neklijn. Ik koos er voor om de zoom van de rok af te werken met de ruche, gewoon omdat ik dan nog meer met de streepjes kon spelen 🙂

For my first version I chose a double gauze from stoffen.net. Nice and airy, loosely woven and I was curious about how this pattern would work with stripes. Something told me that this could have a fun effect. For this first version I chose to only provide a button closure for the bodice, and not for the skirt part (because well, buttonholes …). I went for a sleeveless model with a narrow ruffle at the neckline. I chose to finish the hem of the skirt with the ruffle, simply because I could play with the stripes even more 🙂

Ik maakte ook nog een tweede versie in een zacht en soepel katoentje van Qjutie kids (Cotton Flowers Garland-serie) dat ik aankocht via de webshop van naaiplezier.nl. De stof is er nu echter niet meer beschikbaar.
Deze keer maakte ik de mouwloze versie met een brede ruche omheen de neklijn en liet ik het knopenpad wél doorlopen in het rokdeel. (Dat is dus waarom testen zo leuk is, het trekt je zo nu en dan even uit die comfort-zone en daagt je uit. Knoopsgaten ga ik vaak uit de weg, maar nu dus niet meer!) Ik vind de ruche in de zoom alles een extra speels tintje geven, en heb die dus ook hier behouden.

I made a second version in a soft and supple cotton from Qjutie kids (Cotton Flowers Garland series) that I purchased via the naaiplezier.nl webshop. However, this fabric is no longer available there.
This time I made the sleeveless version with a wide ruffle around the neckline and I let the button pad continue into the skirt part. (So that’s why testing is so much fun, it pulls you out of that comfort zone every now and then and challenges you. I often avoid buttonholes, but not anymore!) I like the ruffle in the hem give everything an extra playful touch, and have therefore kept it here.

Ik vind het een heel fijn patroontje, dat niet bijzonder moeilijk te maken is, maar er wel uitziet alsof je het net in een hippe winkel hebt gekocht 🙂
Laat je niet afschrikken door de knoopsgaten, maar ga net als ik de uitdaging aan, het zal je niet spijten… Ik oefende eerst op een apart lapje stof, en ging nadien probleemloos aan de slag.

I think it is a very dainty pattern, which is not particularly difficult to make, but looks like you just bought it in a trendy store 🙂
Don’t be put off by the buttonholes, but just like me take up the challenge, you will not regret it … I first practiced on a separate piece of fabric, and then went to work without any problems.
