Sinds kort test ik patronen van Little Lizard King. Ik had al eerder met hun patronen gewerkt, maar nog nooit eerder meegedraaid in testing daar. Wat een toffe testomgeving! Iedereen is er super positief, en er is veel ruimte voor feedback. Als tester voel je je in ieder geval erg gewaardeerd en betrokken.

Recently I started testing patterns from Little Lizard King. I had worked with their patterns before but had never been involved in testing there before. What a great test environment! Everyone is very positive and nice, and there is a lot of room for feedback. In any case, as a tester you feel very appreciated and involved.

Nadat ik mee testte voor de Sinclair romper (een super tof patroontje, binnenkort meer daarover, ik zit wat achterop…), nam ik deel aan de test voor het Glastonbury patroon. En dat zowel voor kinderen als volwassenen.
Het leukste aan dit patroon? Dat je er meteen een hele outfit mee naait, want het bestaat uit een top en een rok. Voor de top kies je uit crop top of normale shirt en kan je gaan voor een simpele versie of een versie met een vals knopenpad. Voor de rok kan je dan weer uit lengte midi (halfweg de kuit) of maxi (tot op de enkel) kiezen, en ook daar kies je voor een eenvoudig model of een model met 1 of 2 ruches onderin.

After I tested for the Sinclair romper (a super cool pattern, more about that soon, I’m a bit behind …), I took part in the test for the Glastonbury pattern. And that for both children and adults.
The best thing about this pattern? That you immediately sew a whole outfit with it, because it consists of a top and a skirt. For the top you choose from crop top or regular shirt and you can go for a simple version or a version with a faux placket. For the skirt you can choose midi length (mid-calf) or maxi (to the ankle), and you can also choose between a simple model or a model with 1 or 2 ruffles at the bottom.

Voor mijn 9-jarige dochter, toch al echt een pré-tiener, maakte ik de crop top. De eenvoudige versie zonder knopenpad. De pasvorm is perfect, en het naait ook vlotjes. De nekboord en mouwboord zijn aangestikt met de ‘binding’methode (wie-o-wie kent de correcte Nederlandse benaming hiervoor?). Het topje is uiteraard in een rekbaar stofje, in mijn geval een eenvoudige, muntgroene jersey tricot. Ik naaide maat 7 jaar, verlengd tot maat 8 jaar.

For my 9-year-old daughter, already a pre-teen, I made the crop top. The simple version without button placket. The fit is perfect, and it sews smoothly too. The neckband and sleeve bands are stitched with the ‘binding’ method. The top is of course in a stretchy fabric, in my case a simple, mint green jersey. I sewed size 7 years, extended to size 8 years.

De rok is gemaakt van geweven stof, en dus niet rekbaar. Ik gebruikte een viscose. Ook hier ging ik voor de eenvoudigste versie. Je naait de zijnaden en vervolgens zet je de heupboord er aan. In die boord verwerk je een dikke elastische band. Ook daar maakte ik maatje 7 jaar, verlengd tot 8 jaar.

The skirt is made of woven fabric, so it is not stretchy. I used a viscose. Here too I went for the simplest version. You sew the side seams and then you put the waistband on. You process a thick elastic band in the waistband. There I also made size 7 years, extended to 8 years.

Voor mijn 7-jarige maakte ik de top in t-shirt lengte, en mét vals knopenpad. Deze keer in maatje 6 jaar, verlengd tot 7 jaar. Voor de rok koos ik de versie met 1 gerimpelde laag onderin. Je kan ook een versie met dubbele ruche maken.

For my 7-year-old I made the top in t-shirt length, and with faux placket. This time in size 6 years, extended to 7 years. For the skirt I chose the version with 1 gathered layer at the bottom. You can also make a double ruffle version.

Ik vind het heerlijk dat ik met 1 patroon twee verschillende outfits kan maken. Doordat je dezelfde stoffen gebruikt, matchen ze mooi, maar toch is het net even wat anders. Dat levert ook een leuke reeks foto’s op 🙂
De kat wou ook graag even mee op de foto…

I love that I can make two different outfits with one pattern. Because you can use the same fabrics, they match nicely, but are still slightly different. That also produces a nice series of photos 🙂

Ten slotte maakte ik ook de versie voor dames. De top, met vals knopenpad in crop top lengte, maakte ik in maatje 8. De rok maakte ik in maatje 12, maar lengte maat 8. Ik koos hier opnieuw voor 1 ruche onderaan. Als ik eens tijd te veel heb, maak ik er een top in t-shirtlengte bij, want met de crop top voel ik me niet helemaal in mijn sas 😉

Finally, I also made the version for ladies. The top, with false button placket in crop top length, I made in size 8. I made the skirt in size 12, but length size 8. I again chose 1 ruffle at the bottom. If I have too much time on my hands, I will make a top in t-shirt length, because with the crop top I do not feel completely comfortable 😉

Sofilantjes – Aureum

De Aureum-top, alweer een TOPpertje van Sofilantjes!
Wat ik het leukste vind aan dit nieuwe patroon? Het feit dat dit patroon niet beschikt over 1 racerback optie, maar er maar liefst vier verschillende aanbiedt! Je kan dus eindeloos gaan variëren…

Voor mijn probeerversie maakte ik eerst een versie in t-shirt-lengte. Ik ben fan van topjes die lang vallen, dus dat zit alvast snor! Vooraan ziet het er uit als een eerder ‘gewone’ zomerse top, maar dan die achterkant… Jullie weten het ondertussen al, ik heb iets met mooie details op de rug. En toen kwam dit patroon uit….
Voor mijn eerste versie koos ik voor de druppelvormige uitsparing (optie B). Om het rugdetail nog wat extra in de verf te zetten (of wat dacht je?) gebruikte ik een stukje rekbaar kant, een overschotje dat ik nog had liggen van toen ik de Wrapped-in-love van Ellie&Mac maakte.

For my trial version, I first made a t-shirt-length version. I’m a fan of tops that fall long, so that’s great! At the front it looks like a rather ‘normal’ summer top, but then that back … You already know, I have something with nice details on the back. And then this pattern came out ….
For my first version I opted for the teardrop-shaped keyhole (option B). To emphasize the back detail (or what do you think?) I used a piece of stretchy lace, which was left over from when I made Ellie & Mac’s Wrapped-in-love.

Dit patroon zit eigenlijk best eenvoudig in elkaar! De moeilijkheid zit hem een beetje in het aanzetten van de rekbare biaisband. Dat is de eerste keer toch wel even zoeken, herinner ik me… Ik verdeelde de neklijn en armsgaten telkens in vier gelijke delen, net als de biaisbanden die ik moest aanzetten. Een beetje zoals bij het aanzetten van een heupboord of mouwboord dus. Dat werkte voor mij prima. Ik maakte wel gebruik van voorgevormde rekbare biais, maar je kan deze dus ook zelf maken. De nodige info om dat alles tot een goed einde te brengen, staat netjes omschreven in de handleiding bij het patroon. (Die handleiding is overigens in het Nederlands, Engels en Frans beschikbaar!)
Ik maakte maat 40, verbreed naar maat 44 voor de heupen.

This pattern is actually quite simple! The difficulty is in putting on the stretchy bias tape. If it is your first time, it’s a little fiddly, as I remeber… I divided the neckline and armholes into four equal parts, just like the bias tapes I had to put on. A bit like when putting on a waistband or neckband. That worked fine for me. I did use pre-formed stretch bias, but you can also make it yourself. The necessary information to complete all this is neatly described in the manual with the pattern. (This manual is available in Dutch, English and French!)
I made size 40, widened to size 44 for the hips.

Terwijl ik het t-shirt naaide, rees in mijn hoofd de vraag ‘Hoe zou de combinatie met een Solis cirkelrok er uit zien?’. Tja, dat moest ik dus gaan proberen… 🙂
Ik toon jullie hieronder hoe ik het aanpakte om dat mooie rugdetail van de Aureum in te passen op het patroon van de Solis. Vooral het bovenlijfje vraagt wat aanpassingen.

As I was sewing the t-shirt, the question ‘What would the combination with a Solis circle skirt look like?’ arose. Well, I had to try that … 🙂
I will show you below how I approached to fit that beautiful back detail of the Aureum into the pattern of the Solis. Especially the bodice requires some adjustments.

Eerst legde ik de patroondelen van het bovenlijfje van de Solis bovenop het patroondeel van de Aereum. Ik zorgde ervoor dat de punten bovenaan de zijnaad (net onder je oksel dus) samen vielen. Ik nam dan de zijnaad en de onderkant van het patroondeel van de Solis over op dat van de Aureum.
Zoals je kan zien op de foto’s hieronder valt de naad middenvoor en middenachter dan nog steeds niet helemaal samen. Dat gaf echter geen problemen achteraf, bij het aanzetten van de cirkelrok. In de taille zit het kleedje nu iets ruimer dan de Solis, maar het is zeker niet storend!

First, I put the pattern pieces of the torso of the Solis on top of the pattern part of the Aereum. I made sure that the points at the top of the side seam (just below your armpit) coincided. I then copied the side seam and the bottom of the pattern part of the Solis to that of the Aureum.
As you can see in the pictures below, the seam mid front and mid back still doesn’t quite coincide. However, that did not cause any problems afterwards, when putting on the circle skirt. At the waist, the dress is now slightly more spacious than the Solis, but it is certainly not disturbing!

Ik verknipte het patroon en nadien mijn stof. Voor het rugdetail koos ik voor weer een ander overschotje stretch kant. Aan die patroondelen hoefde ik niets te veranderen. Deze keer koos ik voor de overlappende uitsparing (optie C).
En verder knipte ik gewoon de cirkelrok van de Solis. En that’s it!
Meer houdt deze hack echt niet in… Voor het lijfje volgde ik de instructies van de Aureum, en nadien zette ik de cirkelrok eraan.
Ik ben super tevreden over het resultaat!

I cut the pattern accordingly and then my fabric. For the back detail I chose yet another leftover stretch lace. I did not have to change anything about those pattern parts. This time I chose the overlapping keyhole (option C).
And then I just cut out the circle skirt from the Solis. And that’s it!
There’s nothing more to this hack really… For the bodice, I followed the instructions of the Aureum, and after that I put on the circle skirt.
I am very satisfied with the result!

De witte stof met blauwe rozen is niet langer verkrijgbaar. De stof is scuba, en dus zo goed als kreukvrij.
De zwarte stof met roze bloemetjes is een viscosejersey, maar momenteel uitverkocht op de webshop van Stoffen.net.
De zwarte stretch kant is ook niet meer verkrijgbaar en haalde ik eveneens bij de webshop van Stoffen.net.
De jeansblauwe stretch kant komt van Driessen. Deze is nog wel verkrijgbaar.

The white fabric with blue roses is no longer available. The fabric is scuba, and therefore virtually wrinkle-free.
The black fabric with pink flowers is a viscose jersey, but is currently sold out at the Stoffen.net webshop.
The black stretch lace is also no longer available and I also got it from the Stoffen.net webshop.
The jeans blue stretch lace comes from Driessen. This is still available.

Be Graceful

De Be Graceful Dress van Ellie&Mac heeft een update gehad.
Dit is geen nieuw patroon, maar een patroon dat werd hertest en verder op punt gezet.
Zo werd onder andere manier waarop je het rokdeel aan het bovenlijfje vastzet aangepast. Dat betekent dat ook de handleiding helemaal is vernieuwd.
Met de nieuwe methode naai je een tunnel waar je rekker doorheen trekt, wat voor een veel mooiere pasvorm zorgt en gelijkmatiger rimpels ter hoogte van de taille. Zo krijg je veel minder de ‘ik-zie-er-zwanger-uit’-look die je soms verkrijgt wanneer je een rokdeel rimpelt en dan aanzet….
Verder werden de patroondelen van zowel de rok als het lijfje aangepast (een tikkeltje smaller gemaakt, zodat het mooier aansluit) en de lengte van de mouwen werd ook geperfectioneerd.

Ellie & Mac’s Be Graceful Dress has had an update.
This is not a new pattern, but one that has been retested and refined.
For example, the way you attach the skirt part to the bodice was adjusted. This means that the manual has also been completely renewed.
With the new method you sew a casing through which you pull elastic, which ensures a much nicer fit and more even gathers at the waist. This way you get less of the ‘look-pregnant’ look that you sometimes get when you gather a skirt and then attach it ….
Furthermore, the pattern parts of both the skirt and the bodice were adjusted (made a little narrower, so that it fits better) and the length of the sleeves was also perfected.

Ik maakte er ineens drie!

I made three of them!

De donkerblauwe is eigenlijk een heerlijke winter-fleece met paardenbloem-pluisjes-print. De binnenkant is ultra-zacht! Ik maakte deze met lange mouwen, zodat ik een leuk winterkleedje heb!

The dark blue one is actually a lovely winter fleece with a dandelion fluff print. The inside is ultra-soft! I made this with long sleeves, so I have a nice winter dress!

De tweede maakte ik in een heerlijk retro-look stofje. Ik dacht eerlijk gezegd dat dit helemaal niet bij mij zou passen, maar ik vind het resultaat echt tof geworden! Alleen balen toen ik foto’s had gemaakt, en dan pas een typische beginners-fout opmerkte… Ik naaide zo enthousiast (en gezien beperkte naaitijd – dit was pré-corona-tijdperk – ook wel een beetje haastig) dat het voorpand van het rokdeel onderste boven zit… Ik weet het, had ik het niet gezegd, je had het wellicht niet eens opgemerkt… Maar jij weet dan weer dat eens je het zelf hebt opgemerkt, je nooit nog helemaal tevreden kan zijn met je werk…
Fout of niet, toch zal ik deze zeker dragen!

The second I made in a lovely retro-look fabric. I honestly thought that this would not suit me at all, but I really like the result! I was a bit disappointed when I saw the pictures I took, and only then noticed a typical beginner mistake … I sewed so enthusiastically (and given limited sewing time – this was pre-corona era – a bit hasty too) that the front panel of the skirt part is upside down … I know, if I wouldn’t have said it, you might not even have noticed … But then again you know that once you have noticed it yourself, you can never be completely satisfied with your work. ..
Wrong or not, I will definitely wear it!

En dan tenslotte nog een derde versie, klaar voor de lente! Deze keer met 3/4 mouwen.
Ik naaide in tijden niet met zwart-wit, dus deze vond ik dan nog best ‘classy’ 🙂
Het stofje kocht ik in de webshop van Driessen en is een jersey piqué. Geen strijkwerk aan!

And finally a third version, ready for spring! This time with 3/4 sleeves.
I did not sew with black and white in ages, so I found it became quite ‘classy’ 🙂

O ja, zoals je reeds hebt gemerkt: zakken zijn inbegrepen bij dit patroon!
Waar wacht je nog op? Met dit patroon kan je heel wat kanten uit!
Je kiest voor een rok tot op de knie of een maxi-rok, en je hebt de keuze voor korte mouwen, 3/4 mouwen en lange mouwen. Combineer dat met zomer- of winterstoffen, en je maakt flatterende kleedjes voor elk seizoen!

Oh yes, as you have already noticed: pockets are included with this pattern!
What are you waiting for? You can go in many directions with this pattern!
You choose a knee-length skirt or a maxi skirt, and you have the choice of short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves and long sleeves. Combine that with summer or winter fabrics, and you make flattering dresses for every season!

Wrapped in love: gala-dress-hack

When I first saw the testcall for the wrapped in love dress, I immediately saw a great hacking opportunity 🙂

I came across this pinspiration and knew the wrapped in love dress would provide the perfect base!

I had to try and hack it to achieve this look! I used the pattern piece of the front bodice and altered it to have a sweetheart neckline. I used that altered piece to cut my liner. I also changed the back bodice pattern piece for the liner. All I did then, was cutting my main pieces out of a stretch lace fabric (sleeves, front and back bodice), and using that as an overlay.

I was doubting: should I attach the liner to the overlay fabric or not? I decided to stitch it on, and risk it pulling down the lace fabric. Otherwise it might shift or lay loose and unflattering. Turned out that was a good decision. The liner is secured to the main following the curves of the liner, and afterwards I did catch it in the side seams as well. I love the result! Since I was just trying, I had lengthened the bodice pattern pieces, so I could use it as a top. But once I had it ready, I thought it would be fun if I didn’t attach the skirt, but keep it as a separate. I just cut the skirt pieces in my liner fabric and used elastic band on top. Serged it on (on the inside) and then folded it over to the inside and stitched it together.

Now I have a fancy dress, but can just as well wear the top on a jeans!

Now everything worked out, I had to make a black one! I tried to make some pictures to show you how I hacked it.

First, I want to show you what I did with the pattern pieces. On the pictures below, you get to see how I altered them.

On the front bodice, I drew a curved line to create the sweetheart neckline for the liner. To make sure the liner wouldn’t shift, I started above the armpit. This way, the liner will get caught when putting in the sleeve, keeping it in place. I wanted to make sure that there wasn’t to much exposure, so I can easily wear a strapless bra underneath. But of course, you can play around with the curve to your own liking. For the back bodice, I just folded down the top part of the pattern piece, creating a straight line. Again I made sure that line runs above the armpit. To prevent shifting, and to cover up my bra.
To create a top, I just lengthened the pattern piece by adding 5 inches to the bottom. Since I wanted my hips to fit in, I did let it flare outwards.

Now for the black version: this is how my fabrics looked like once cut.

Since I wanted the scalloped hem of my lace fabric, I had to cut the back bodice in two, creating a middle back seam.

My first step was attaching the liner of the front bodice to the main of the front bodice, following the new lines on my liner. And then repeating that for the back bodice.

All that was left was attaching bodice front to back at the shoulder seams, making sure my stretch fabric was sandwiched in between the liner fabric. Next step was attaching the sleeves and closing the side seams. I made sure to catch both my main and liner fabric when doing so.

Since this stretch lace had a beautiful scalloped hem, I now had a second top ready! All that was left, was making a black skirt as described earlier in this post. Now I have 4 pieces to play with! This black dress makes me feel gorgeous!

South Shore Romper

Iedere naaister heeft ze: patronen die je hebt aangeschaft de dag dat ze gereleased werden en meteen op je to-sew-lijst komen te staan, maar daar dan héél lang blijven staan. Gewoonweg omdat je meestal maar een beperkte hoeveelheid naaitijd hebt, in combinatie met een teveel aan ideeën en bijgevolg een te lange to-sew-lijst…
De South Shore Romper was er bij mij zo eentje…
Toen het patroon uitkwam, wist ik meteen dat ik het wou uitproberen. Jumpsuits in de winkel lijken me op een of andere manier nooit te passen. Wellicht omdat ik een smalle taille heb, maar wel brede heupen. Enter zelf kleding maken, want die pas je gewoon helemaal aan aan je eigen lijf. En ik heb in al die tijd geen enkele dame in de groep gezien die er niet mee stond, met die South Shore Romper...

Every seamstress has them: patterns that you purchased the day they were released and immediately appear on your to-sew list, but then remain there for a very long time. Simply because you usually only have a limited amount of sewing time, in combination with too many ideas and therefore a too long to-sew list …
The South Shore Romper was one of those for me…
When the pattern came out, I immediately knew that I wanted to try it out. Jumpsuits in the store somehow never seem to fit me. Perhaps because I have a S waist, but M/L hips. Enter making your own clothing, because you simply adjust it completely to your own body. And I haven’t seen a single lady not looking good in it in all that time…

En toen werd het januari en organiseerde mijn schoonzus het Stikking Together naaiweekend. Wat vooraf een zee van naai-tijd leek, was ook zo weer voorbij, maar wat is het genieten om eens twee-en-een halve dag lang niets anders te doen dan dat wat je graag doet! En zo vond ik dus eindelijk de tijd om met dit patroon aan de slag te gaan.
Ik maakte de versie met lange pijpen en zonder mouwen in een kreukvrije scuba crêpe van Driessen Stoffen. Voor het eerst in mijn leven trok ik een jumpsuit aan en ging ik voor de spiegel staan en dacht ik: “Hé, het kan toch! Ik heb een jumpsuit aan en het is niet mis!” De reacties van de andere dames bevestigden dit, en dat maakte dit kledingstuk in één klap tot mijn top-stuk van het voorbije naaiweekend!

And then it became January and my sister-in-law organized the Stikking Together sewing weekend. What previously seemed like a sea of sewing time, was over before I knew it, but what a pleasure it is to be able to do what you like (and nothing but doing what you like) for two and a half days! And so I finally found the time to get started with this pattern.
I made the long, sleeveless jumpsuit version in a wrinkle-free scuba crepe from Driessen Stoffen. For the first time in my life I put on a jumpsuit and stood in front of the mirror and thought: “Hey, it is possible! I am wearing a jumpsuit and it is not wrong!” The reactions of the other ladies confirmed this, and that made this garment in one fell swoop my top piece of the past sewing weekend!

Ik veranderde helemaal niets aan het patroon. Het bovenlijfje is een S, de broek een M. Ik verlengde het lijfje, volgens de aanwijzingen in het patroon, met 2,5 cm. Zo valt het precies in de taille, waar het hoort te vallen.
Door de ingenaaide elastiek in de taille wordt deze mooi geaccentueerd. De wijde pijpen zorgen er dan weer voor dat mijn heupen niet te veel in het oog springen en brengen het geheel, naar mijn aanvoelen, in balans. O ja, er zitten zakken in! Ik zette deze per abuis wat te laag in, maar eigenlijk ben ik blij dat ik dit deed, want zo vallen ze net onder mijn billen, en zorgen ze dus niet voor extra stof op mijn ‘breedste punt’ 🙂

I did not change the pattern at all. The bodice is an S, the pants an M. I extended the bodice to adjust for side-waist, according to the instructions in the pattern, by 1 inch. This way it falls exactly at the waist, where it should fall.
This is beautifully accentuated by the sewn-in elastic at the waist. The wide legs ensure that my hips do not stand out too much and bring the whole, in my opinion, into balance. And… it has pockets! I accidentally put them a little too low, but actually I’m glad I did, because now they just fall under my buttocks, so they don’t provide extra fabric at my ‘widest point’ 🙂

Hij draagt zeer comfortabel, zit heerlijk en is qua lengte ook perfect. Hier komen er zeker nog meer van onder de machine vandaan! Ik ben niet zo aan capri-lengte, maar de kortere playsuit-versie zal ik deze zomer zeker uittesten.
En eind april is dit patroon ook een zeer grote kanshebber voor mijn kleding op de eerste communie van de jongste…

Net zoals alle patronen van Ellie&Mac zit het ook in geen tijd in elkaar! De andere Stikking Together dames schrokken van de snelheid waarmee ik van knippen tot klaar ging. Met wat kletsen tussendoor deed ik over dat alles minder dan anderhalf uur!

Just like all of Ellie & Mac’s patterns, it can also be created in no time! The other Stikking Together ladies were flabbergasted at the speed with which I went from cut to finish. With some chatting in between, I did everything in less than an hour and a half!
