De Peppermint Swirl Dress van Candy Castle Patterns sprak al een hele tijd tot mijn verbeelding. Maar het naaien bleef ik uitstellen, omdat het er behoorlijk tijdsintensief uitzag. Een ander Candy Castle patroon dat ik al een tijdje in de gaten had, is de Strawberry Laces Lace-Up Dress, vanwege de mooie, zomerse afwerking op de rug. En toen kwam er, midden in de corona-lockdown, een oproep voor testers om de handleiding voor een mash-up van deze jurken uit te proberen. Het beste van twee werelden: de prachtige zwierrok van de Peppermint Swirl, met de oogverblindende rug van de Strawberry Lace. Ik kon het niet laten… Ik moest het eindelijk eens maken!

The Peppermint Swirl Dress from Candy Castle Patterns appealed to my imagination for a long time. But I kept procrastinating because it looked quite time-consuming. Another Candy Castle pattern that I have been aware of for a while is the Strawberry Laces Lace-Up Dress, because of the beautiful, summery finish on the back. And then, right in the middle of the corona lockdown, a call came for testers to try out the mash-up guide to these dresses. The best of both worlds: the beautiful petticoat of the Peppermint Swirl, with the dazzling back of the Strawberry Lace. I couldn’t resist … I finally had to make it!

De Peppermint Swirl is een echte blikvanger, ik zag tot op heden nog geen enkel patroon dat het effect van deze zwierrok benadert. Maar mijn vermoeden was ook helemaal waar: dit is niet een patroon dat je even gauw in elkaar stikt… Vooral het knippen kostte heel wat tijd! En stof.
Maar eens je begint te naaien, en je langzaam aan die rok ziet tevoorschijn komen, vergeet je het labeur van het knippen… 😉
Weetje: ik werkte de zoom van de rok af met lusjesband. Maar liefst 9 meter!

The Peppermint Swirl is a real eye-catcher, I have not yet seen a single pattern that approaches the effect of this skirt. But my suspicion was also completely true: this is not a pattern that you stitch together quickly … Especially the cutting took a lot of time! And a lot of fabric.
But once you start sewing, and you slowly see that skirt emerge, you forget the work you had on cutting it …;)
Fact: I finished the hem of the skirt with loop band. No less than 9 meters!

Het bovenlijfje van de Strawberry lace is eenvoudig te naaien. Waar hier het meeste tijd in kroop, was het strijkwerk voor de linten. Maar dat kan je in feite omzeilen door te werken met voorgevormd biais…

The top of the Strawberry lace is easy to sew. The most time that crept in here was the ironing for the ties. But you can actually get around that by working with store-bought bias …

Het resultaat mag er echt wel zijn! Mijn dochter voelde zich meteen een echte prinses in deze jurk! En uiteraard wil de jongste er nu ook eentje… 🙂

The result is really there! My daughter immediately felt like a real princess in this dress! And of course the youngest now wants one … 🙂

De patronen van beide jurken bestaan reeds, en nu komt er dus een handleiding om beide te combineren.
Dat betekent wel dat je beide patronen moet aanschaffen. Ze zijn elk op zich zeker de moeite waard, en de handleiding voor de mash-up is een extra meerwaarde.

The patterns of both dresses already exist, so now there is a manual to combine both.
That means you have to buy both patterns. Each one is worthwhile in itself, and the manual for the mash-up is an added value.

Ik denk er nu over om de voorkant van het bovenlijfje van de Peppermint Swirl te combineren met het rugdetail van de Strawberry Lace. Wat denken jullie: proberen?

Funfetti Donut Top, Tunic & Dress

Het nieuwste patroon van Candy Castle Patterns is alweer een pareltje! De Funfetti Donut Top, Tuniek en Kleedje beschikt over heel wat opties en maar liefst 8 verschillende stijlen! Zo zijn er drie soorten rokdelen: een gewone cirkelrok, een dubbele cirkelrok en een hoog-laag rok, allen in verschillende lengtes beschikbaar, gaande van peplum/tuniek over mini-jurk tot een rokdeel op knielengte. Er zijn ook heel wat verschillende mouwopties, gaande van mouwloos over korte mouw naar lange mouw en de mogelijkheid om met een korte gedrapeerde mouw (laat het ons ‘vlindermouw’ noemen) of een lange mouw met volants.
Je kan dus eindeloos gaan variëren, en zelfs rok-opties gaan combineren!
Dat was wat ik deed: ik combineerde de mini-dress length rok in dezelfde stof als het lijfje met een dubbele cirkelrok op jurk-lengte in zachte tule.
Ik had nog een restje ZNOK-stof liggen van de Breezy-jurk die ik een tijd terug voor mezelf maakte, dat net voldoende was hiervoor (lang leve restjes!). De tule lag hier al een tijdje op bestemming te wachten. Het was puzzelwerk, maar ik kon er dus heel nipt de dubbele cirkelrok uithalen. Dat zorgt voor wat meer volume, en was dus ideaal voor dit naaiproject!

Candy Castle Patterns‘ newest pattern is another gem! It’s packed with options! There are three types of skirt parts: a regular circle skirt, a double circle skirt and a high-low skirt, all available in different lengths, ranging from peplum / tunic over mini dress to a knee length skirt. There are also quite a few different sleeve options, ranging from sleeveless over short sleeve to long sleeve and the option to have a short fluttersleeve from or a long sleeve with flounces.
So you can make endless variations, and even combine skirt options!
That was what I did: I combined the mini dress length skirt in the same fabric as the bodice with a dress-length double circle skirt in soft tulle.
I still had some leftover ZNOK fabric from the Breezy dress that I made for myself a while back, which was just enough for this dress (long live scraps!). The tulle had been waiting here for a while. It needed to puzzle, but I was able to get out the double circle skirt very closely. This provides a bit more volume, making it ideal for this sewing project!

Een extra optie in het patroon is ook de crop-top lengte. Mijn dochters noemen dit ‘een blote-buik—shirt’. Dat vinden ze helemaal hip! Ik voegde er echter nog een ‘kleinigheidje’ aan toe, namelijk een bijhorende rok. Ik gebruikte daarvoor gewoon de rokdelen die bij het patroon horen en zette er een tailleband aan.
Voor de tailleband gebruikte ik een elastiekband. Ik knipte deze 3 cm korter dan de tailleomtrek. De korte uiteindes aan mekaar naaien, zowel de onafgewerkte bovenkant van de rokdelen als de tailleband in vier gelijke delen verzetten en dan spelden en vaststikken met de lockmachine. Eenvoudig én een regelrechte hit hier!
Als kers op de taart gaf ik er een extra speels tintje aan door de rok om te zomen met een rolzoompje.

An extra option included in the pattern is the crop-top length. My daughters call this ‘a bare belly shirt’. They think that’s totally hip! However, I added a ‘little something’ to it, namely a matching skirt. I just used the skirt parts that belong to the pattern and put on a waistband.
I used an elastic band for the waistband. I cut this a little over 1 inch shorter than the waist circumference. Sew the short ends together, divide the raw edge of the skirt and the waistband in four equal parts and then pin and stitch with the lock machine. Simple and a real hit here!
As icing on the cake, I gave it an extra playful touch by hemming the skirt with a rolled lettuce hem.

SnickerDoodle Sweater

Ik mocht opnieuw meetesten bij Candy Castle Patterns. Kort, maar krachtig deze keer!
De Snickerdoodle Sweater is een trui met raglanmouwen. Je kan verschillende lengtes kiezen: trui of tuniek. Ook bij de mouwen heb je de keuze tussen lange en korte mouwen.
Optioneel kan je ook een buidelzak toevoegen. Zo heeft dit patroon alles in huis om een eenvoudige trui te naaien, voor jongens of meisjes. Mooi meegenomen, als je het mee vraagt!

I was allowed to test again at Candy Castle Patterns. Short but powerful this time!
The Snickerdoodle Sweater is a sweater with raglan sleeves. You can choose different lengths: sweater or tunic. Also with the sleeves you have the choice between long and short sleeves.
Optionally you can also add a kangaroo pocket. This pattern has everything to sew a simple sweater for boys or girls. A nice bonus, if you ask me!

Ik naaide uiteindelijk tot nog toe drie versies, en ben er nogal zeker van dat er nog versies zullen volgen!

I have sewn three versions so far, and am pretty sure that there will be versions to follow!

Versie 1: maat 6 jaar, verlengd tot maat 7.
Version 1: size 6 years, lengthened to size 7.

Ik naaide voor de jongste een tuniek-versie, zonder meer. Het patroon zit ongelooflijk snel in mekaar! Op minder dan drie kwartier van het knippen van de stof tot een afgewerkte trui! Enkel even opletten wanneer je de zijnaden naait, want als je niet aandachtig bent, naai je het voorpand en achterpand als mouwen. Maar dat is eigen aan elk raglan-naaisel. Ik markeerde daarom het voorpand door er een naald in te spelden middenvoor. Ook binnenin markeerde ik het voorpand met een V, en het achterpand met een A. Geen twijfel meer mogelijk! (Onder het mom van ‘een ezel stoot zich geen twee maal aan dezelfde steen’, want ooit naaide ik dus wel de zijnaden fout, en vroeg me nadien af hoe het kon dat die trui zo smal was…)

I sewed a tunic version for the youngest, a simple version. The pattern is put together incredibly fast! Less than 45 minutes from cutting the fabric to a finished sweater! Just pay attention when sewing the side seams, because if you are not paying attention, you might sew the front and back as sleeves. But that is typical for every raglan project. I therefore marked the front piece by pinning a needle in the center front. Inside I also marked the front with an F, and the back with an B. No doubt possible! (Under the guise of ‘a donkey does not hit the same stone twice’, because sometime I did sew the side seams, and afterwards wondered how it was possible that the sweater was so narrow …)

Versie 2: maat 7 jaar, verlengd tot maat 8.
Version 2: size 7 years, lengthened to size 8.

Natuurlijk naaide ik ook voor de oudste een tuniek! Hier ‘smukte’ ik het geheel wat op door een sierpaspelbandje in de raglannaad vooraan te naaien. Dat geeft de trui net dat tikkeltje extra, altijd leuk toch?

Of course I also sewed a tunic for the oldest! Here I ‘embellished’ everything by sewing a decorative piping band in the front raglan seam. That gives the sweater that little bit extra, always nice right?

En ik had geluk, want mijn dametjes wilden ook graag samen op de foto! Het was echt genieten om ze samen bezig te zien…

And I was lucky, because my ladies were up for pictures of them together! I enjoyed them playing around for pictures so much…

Ik maakte een trui voor mezelf (binnenkort meer daarover), en had nog heel wat stof over. Dus ging ik met de overschot aan de slag en maakte er een SnickerDoodle Sweater van 🙂
Kunnen we lekker twinnen 🙂

I made a sweater for myself (more on that soon), and still had a lot of fabric left. So I went to work with the surplus and made it into a SnickerDoodle Sweater 🙂
Now we can twin! 🙂

Deze keer naaide ik dus de sweaterlengte, en voegde ik er de buidelzak aan toe. Ik paste echter een kleine hack toe, door de bandjes te rimpelen, voor een meer meisjesachtige look. Ik knipte daarvoor het patroondeel ervan op de stofvouw, zodat die dubbel zo lang werden. Nadien vouwde ik de stof over de lengte, met de rechte kanten op elkaar, en stikte de zijnaden (korte zijdes). Dan draaide ik de band met de goede kant naar buiten toe, en stikte rimpeldraden. Na het rimpelen, zette ik de banden vast aan de buidel met de overlockmachine. Normaalgezien rek je die band uit, zodat deze mooi plat valt als je de buidel op het voorpand stikt. Dat kon nu niet, door de rimpeldraden. Daardoor valt de band dus niet helemaal mooi plat, maar ik vind het resultaat toch best geslaagd.
Tips om dit beter te maken, zijn steeds welkom!
Ik ga proberen het bij deze versie op te lossen door er nog transparante elastiek tegen te stikken aan de achterzijde.
Bij een volgende versie overweeg ik om de band iets dunner te maken, en het rimpelen aan de hand van een elastiek te doen, zodat het mooi elastisch blijft. Maar ik weet niet of dit de beste methode is, dus als je er een betere weet, geef gerust een reactie!

So this time I sewed the sweater length and added the pouch. However, I applied a small hack, by gathering the bands, for a more girlish look. To do so, I cut the pattern part of the pocket band on the fabric fold, so that they became twice as long. Afterwards I folded the fabric along the length, with the straight sides together, and stitched the side seams (short sides). Then I turned the band with the right side out and stitched gathering threads. After gathering, I fastened the straps to the pouch with the overlock machine. Normally you stretch that band, so that it falls nicely flat when you attach the pouch to the front. That was not possible now, because of the gathering threads. As a result, the band is not completely flat, but I think the result is still quite successful.
Tips to make this better are always welcome!
I am going to try to solve it with this version by stitching transparent elastic on the back of the band.
In the next version I consider making the band a little thinner and gathering it with elastic, so that it stays nice and stretchable. But I don’t know if this is the best method, so if you know a better one, feel free to comment!

Merry Christmas 🎄

Voor kerst naaide ik twee tuniekjes van het Marzipan patroon dat ik onlangs mocht uittesten. Met de hoge coll en een feestelijke strik is dit patroon heel geschikt voor een winterse feestjurk!

To celebrate Christmas I have sewn two tunics of the Marzipan pattern that I recently had the chance to test. With the high collar and a festive bow, this pattern is very suitable for a winter party dress!

Ik koos voor French Terry van Stenzo, thema Winter Wonderland dat ik onlangs kocht op een stoffenbeurs aan het kraampje van ‘Zus&Gus’. De kleuren zijn zo mooi en heerlijk winters, met hun knappe tekening super geschikt voor mijn steeds groter wordende meiden! En bovendien kunnen ze nadien nog perfect aan om naar school te gaan ook (dé reden waarom ik deze keer niet voor een kerstprint ging, altijd zonde als ze hun zelfgemaakte kleedjes nadien niet meer aankunnen…).

I chose a French Terry from Stenzo, themed Winter Wonderland which I recently bought at a fabric fair at the “Zus & Gus” stand. The colors are so beautiful and wonderfully wintry, with that handsome drawing of a girl, super suitable for my growing girls! And moreover, afterwards, they can also perfectly wear it to school (the reason why I did not go for a Christmas print this time, always a shame if they can no longer wear their handmade dresses afterwards …).

Er komt nog minstens 1 Marzipan aan in jurk-lengte! Deze keer moest ik noodgedwongen opnieuw voor tunieklengte kiezen vanwege de paneelstoffen…

At least 1 more Marzipan is coming in dress length! This time I was forced to choose tunic length again because of the panel fabrics …

Voor de versie van de oudste koos ik ervoor het achterpand niet uit het paneel te halen, maar deze wel af te werken met een strik achteraan. Die zit in principe bij het patroon, maar wegens gebrek aan stof koos ik voor een mooi zilvergrijs satijnlint.

For the version of the oldest, I chose not to use the border for the back, but to finish it with a bow at the back. That is in principle with the pattern, but due to lack of fabric I opted for a beautiful silver gray satin ribbon.

Voor de versie van de jongste liet ik de border wel doorlopen achteraan, en liet ik daarom de strik achterwege. Het paneel is zo mooi op zichzelf, het was zonde om dit weg te stoppen achter een strik…

For the version of the youngest, I was able to use the border for both the front and the back, so I omitted the bow. The panel is so beautiful in itself, it was a shame to hide this behind a bow …

O ja, ze wilden beiden mouwboorden waar hun duim doorheen kan, die optie is eveneens voorzien in het patroon!

Oh yes, they both wanted thumbhole cuffs, that option is also provided in the pattern!

Marzipan

Candy Castle Patterns heeft een nieuw patroon uit, dat perfect is voor deze tijd van het jaar, wanneer het buiten koud is en met feestdagen voor de deur!
De Marzipan Mix&Match Tunic and Dress heeft een pak leuke opties waaruit je kan kiezen.
Naast de lengte (tuniek of kleedje), kan je kiezen voor lange, 3/4 of korte mouwen, al dan niet met een fronsje aan de schouders. Je kan een gewone nekboord aanzetten, of je kiest voor de hoge kraag. Je kan het geheel nog verder opsmukken met striklinten, mouwboordje met of zonder duimgaatjes en ten slotte heb je de keuze om al dan niet zakken te voorzien.
Met je stofkeuze geef je het kledingstuk verder richting. Een zomers jurkje met normale nekboord en korte mouwen in een dunne tricot, een winterse tuniek met lange mouwen en hoge kraag in een sweaterstof of een gekleed jurkje met een feestelijker stofje: het kan allemaal!

Candy Castle Patterns has released a new pattern that is perfect for this time of year, when it is cold outside and with holidays on the doorstep!
The Marzipan Mix & Match Tunic and Dress has a lot of fun options to choose from.
In addition to the length (tunic or dress), you can opt for long, 3/4 or short sleeves, with or without a ruffle on the shoulders. You can put on a neckband, or you opt for the cowl neck. You can embellish the whole even further with bow ties, cuffs with or without thumb holes and finally you have the choice whether or not to provide pockets.
With your choice of fabric you give the garment further direction. A summery dress with a normal neckband and short sleeves in a thin jersey, a wintery tunic with long sleeves and a cowl in a sweater fabric or a dressy dress with a more festive fabric: it’s all possible!

Ik maakte twee winterse versies, telkens maatje 6 jaar, verlengd tot maatje 7 jaar.

I made two versions, both in size 6, lengthened to size 7.

Voor de eerste versie koos ik een mooie zalmroze french terry met glitters erin, die ik vele jaren geleden kocht bij Veritas. De kraag is een gewone tricot. Dit is tunieklengte, mét zakken. Een zeer draagbaar tuniekje, dat ze meteen aankon om naar school te gaan.

For the first version I chose a beautiful salmon pink French Terry with glitter in it, which I bought from Veritas many years ago. The cowl is a regular jersey. This is tunic length, with pockets. A very wearable tunic that she started wearing immediately to go to school.

Voor de tweede versie haalde ik een mooi paneelstofje boven uit de Wild Shadows collectie van Lycklig Designs dat ik kocht via de webshop van Droomstoffen.nl. (Niet meer beschikbaar)
Deze keer wel een hoge kraag en striklinten, maar geen zakken. Door de eenvoudige snit komt het paneeltje mooi tot zijn recht. Deze tuniek kan nog steeds naar school aan, maar oogt meteen al een pak feestelijker, en kan dus ook perfect dienen tijdens de feestdagen die eraan komen!

For my second version I picked out a nice panel fabric from the Wild Shadows collection of Lycklig Designs that I bought via the Droomstoffen.nl webshop. (No longer available)
This time a cowl and bow ties, but no pockets. The simple cut makes the panel stand out nicely. This tunic can still be worn to school, but immediately looks a lot more festive, and can therefore also serve perfectly during the upcoming holidays!

Deze zomer naaide ik de Little Fizzers Dress, ideaal voor zonnige zomerdagen. Maar deze Marzipan Dress wordt zeker en vast een vast onderdeel van onze wintergarderobe!

This summer I sewed the Little Fizzers Dress, ideal for sunny summer days. But this Marzipan Dress will definitely become a permanent part of our winter wardrobe!
