De herfst is in aantocht. We genieten nog van de laatste zonnestralen, maar wind en regen zijn in het vooruitzicht. Hoog tijd dus om aan de herfst/wintergarderobe te beginnen! (Ja, ik begin daar steeds last-minute aan, een deadline, dat werkt voor mij 🙂 )

Autumn is approaching. We still enjoy the last rays of the sun, but wind and rain are in prospect. So it’s time to start working on an autumn / winter wardrobe! (Yes, I always start last minute, a deadline, that’s what works for me :))

De Hudson Cardigan is het nieuwste patroon van Little Lizard King, en kwam zowel voor meisjes als dames uit. Heel leuk dus om mams-en-ik-setjes te gaan maken. Het patroon kwam samen met de Joliette Skirt uit, en die twee zijn een superhippe match, helemaal volgens de trends van het komende seizoen!
Zelf had ik nog niet de tijd om met het rokpatroon aan de slag te gaan, maar ik naaide wel vier Hudson Cardigans, die ik hier graag even laat zien.

The Hudson Cardigan is Little Lizard King’s newest pattern, and was released for both girls and women. So very nice to make mum-and-me sets. The pattern came out together with the Joliette Skirt, and those two are a super hip match, completely according to the trends of the coming season!
I didn’t have the time to get started with the skirt pattern myself, but I did sew four Hudson Cardigans, which I would like to show here.

Hudson voor dames/Hudson for women

Voor mezelf naaide ik eerst een Cardigan met bishop-sleeves. Ik ben helemaal fan van dit soort mouwen! De afhangende schoudernaad zorgt voor een lossere cardigan, die er lichtjes oversized uitziet, en heerlijk comfy is om dragen. Je kan ook voor een normale mouw met mouwband gaan. En het patroon voorziet zakken! Joepie!
De stof, een zachte tricot, had ik al jaren in mijn voorraad liggen. Jammer genoeg kon ik niet meer achterhalen waar ik deze vandaan haalde…

First I sewed a cardigan with bishop sleeves for myself. I am a big fan of these kind of sleeves! The dropped shoulder seam creates a looser cardigan that looks slightly oversized and is wonderfully comfy to wear. You can also go for a normal sleeve with a sleeve band. And the pattern provides for pockets! Hooray!
I had the fabric, a soft jersey, in my stock for years. Unfortunately I couldn’t find out where I got these from …

Vervolgens maakte ik ook een tweede versie, maar deze keer in “duster”lengte (tot net boven de enkel) en in een stretch-kant die ik vond in de webshop van Driessen. Daardoor krijgt hij een heel andere, romantische vibe. In de zijnaden naaide ik een split, wat in het patroon ook voorzien is.

For my second version, I had a different vision. I chose to make it “duster” length (just above the ankle) and in a stretch lace that I found in the Driessen webshop. This gives it a completely different, romantic vibe. I sewed a vent in the side seams, which is also provided in the pattern.

Hier combineerde ik met de Glastonbury top en rok, ook al een heerlijk Little Lizard King-patroon.

Ik naaide beide versies in maat 6, aangepast naar maat 8 ter hoogte van de heup. De mouwen zijn trouwens ook heel leuk als je de mouwband er niet aanzet, en gewoon omzoomt. Hier hield ik me aan het patroon, maar twijfel nog steeds of ik de boorden er opnieuw zou afhalen en de mouwen laat uitwaaieren. Wat zouden jullie doen?

I sewed both versions of Hudson in size 6, adjusted to size 8 at hip height. The sleeves are also very nice if you don’t put the sleeve band on, and just hem them. Here I stuck to the pattern, but still doubt whether I would take the cuffs off again and let the sleeves fan out. What would you do?

Hudson voor meisjes/Hudson for Girls

Ik zei het al, dit patroon is er ook voor meisjes. Dus maakte ik maat 8 jaar voor Laure. Zij verkoos de aansluitende mouwen, en cardigan-lengte (“want anders kan ik er geen jas overheen, als dat er zo onderuit hangt, vind ik het niet mooi.”) Intussen leerde ik dat ik me maar beter aan de wensen van mijn bijna-tiener hou… 🙂
Waar ze vroeger maar al te graag fotomodel-allures bovenhaalde bij een fotoshoot, was ook dat deze keer geen sinecure… Wie tips heeft om puberende meisjes te overtuigen even mee te werken, zonder schermtijd: ze zijn meer dan welkom 🙂
De eerste versie in een framboosroze ribtricot viel alvast wel heel erg in de smaak, oef! De zakken haalde ik er wel af, want aangezien ik niet het juiste voetje heb op mijn machine, waren die heel hobbelig en bobbelig… De stof heb ik vorig jaar aangeschaft via Stoffen.net.

As I said, this pattern is also available for girls. So I made size 8 years for Laure. She preferred the fitted sleeves and cardigan length (“because otherwise I can’t wear a coat over it, if it hangs out like that, I don’t like it.”) In the meantime I learned that I better take into account my pre-teens wishes … 🙂
Where in the past she was only too happy to bring out fashion model allures at a photoshoot, that was also no easy task this time … Anyone who has tips to convince teenager girls to participate, without screen time: they are more than welcome 🙂
The first version in a raspberry pink rib knit was certainly very popular, phew! I did take the pockets off, because since I don’t have the right foot on my machine, they were very bumpy and lumpy … The fabric was purchased last year via Stoffen.net.

En tenslotte ook voor haar nog een tweede, in een super-toffe zigzag stretch-kant, bohemian style.
De stof haalde ik bij Driessen en naaide gelukkig een pak makkelijker dan de stretch-kant voor mijn duster. Ik slaagde er zelfs in om de zigzag-streepjes te matchen, jeej!
Deze keer mét zakken natuurlijk.

And finally for her also a second Hudson, in a super cool zigzag stretch lace, bohemian style.
I got the fabric from Driessen and luckily it was a lot easier to work with than the stretch lace for my duster. I even managed to match the zigzag dashes, yeey!
This time with pockets of course.

Tekapo

Nog een test waarin ik meedraaide bij Little Lizard King: de Tekapo dress. Leuk weetje: de naam is afkomstig van het Tekapo-meer in Nieuw-Zeeland. Denk aan een prachtig weelderig landschap, en geef dit weer met effen stoffen, pastelkleuren en zachte bloemenprints. Het kleedje is bedoeld voor katoentjes.

Antoher Little Lizard King testing I took part in: the Tekapo Dress. Tekapo is named after Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. Think beautiful lush scenery, solid colour fabrics or soft florals.

Tekapo heeft een V-hals met een smalle of brede ruche langs de halslijn. De verschillende mouwopties maken het ideaal voor elk seizoen!

Het meisjespatroon bevat de volgende opties:

• halve of volledige knoopsluiting

• eenvoudige zoom of ruches

• top of jurk lengte

• mouwloos, korte mouwen of lange mouwen

• brede of smalle ruche langs de neklijn.

Tekapo features a V neck with a unique small or large bodice ruffle. The various sleeve options make it ideal for any season!

The girls pattern includes the following options:

• half or full button down closure

• simple or ruffle hem

• top or dress length

• sleeveless, short sleeves or long sleeves

• large or small bodice ruffle

Voor mijn eerste versie koos ik een double gauze van stoffen.net. Lekker luchtig, los geweven en ik was benieuwd naar hoe dit patroon zou werken met streepjes. Iets zei me dat dit best wel eens een leuk effect zou kunnen geven. Voor deze eerste versie koos ik ervoor enkel een knoopssluiting te voorzien voor het lijfje, en dus niet voor het rokdeel (want ja, knoopsgaten…). Ik ging voor een mouwloos modelletje met een smalle ruche in de neklijn. Ik koos er voor om de zoom van de rok af te werken met de ruche, gewoon omdat ik dan nog meer met de streepjes kon spelen 🙂

For my first version I chose a double gauze from stoffen.net. Nice and airy, loosely woven and I was curious about how this pattern would work with stripes. Something told me that this could have a fun effect. For this first version I chose to only provide a button closure for the bodice, and not for the skirt part (because well, buttonholes …). I went for a sleeveless model with a narrow ruffle at the neckline. I chose to finish the hem of the skirt with the ruffle, simply because I could play with the stripes even more 🙂

Ik maakte ook nog een tweede versie in een zacht en soepel katoentje van Qjutie kids (Cotton Flowers Garland-serie) dat ik aankocht via de webshop van naaiplezier.nl. De stof is er nu echter niet meer beschikbaar.
Deze keer maakte ik de mouwloze versie met een brede ruche omheen de neklijn en liet ik het knopenpad wél doorlopen in het rokdeel. (Dat is dus waarom testen zo leuk is, het trekt je zo nu en dan even uit die comfort-zone en daagt je uit. Knoopsgaten ga ik vaak uit de weg, maar nu dus niet meer!) Ik vind de ruche in de zoom alles een extra speels tintje geven, en heb die dus ook hier behouden.

I made a second version in a soft and supple cotton from Qjutie kids (Cotton Flowers Garland series) that I purchased via the naaiplezier.nl webshop. However, this fabric is no longer available there.
This time I made the sleeveless version with a wide ruffle around the neckline and I let the button pad continue into the skirt part. (So that’s why testing is so much fun, it pulls you out of that comfort zone every now and then and challenges you. I often avoid buttonholes, but not anymore!) I like the ruffle in the hem give everything an extra playful touch, and have therefore kept it here.

Ik vind het een heel fijn patroontje, dat niet bijzonder moeilijk te maken is, maar er wel uitziet alsof je het net in een hippe winkel hebt gekocht 🙂
Laat je niet afschrikken door de knoopsgaten, maar ga net als ik de uitdaging aan, het zal je niet spijten… Ik oefende eerst op een apart lapje stof, en ging nadien probleemloos aan de slag.

I think it is a very dainty pattern, which is not particularly difficult to make, but looks like you just bought it in a trendy store 🙂
Don’t be put off by the buttonholes, but just like me take up the challenge, you will not regret it … I first practiced on a separate piece of fabric, and then went to work without any problems.

Sinclair

Sinclair is een korte romper met een babydoll-stijl lijfje van Little Lizard King. Het bestond reeds voor baby’s, maar is nu ook beschikbaar voor meisjes tot 14 jaar.
Voor baby’s is het een heel koddige stijl, maar ook voor meisjes kan hij nog helemaal door de beugel! Mijn 7- en bijna-10-jarige dochters vinden hem beiden fantastisch!
Ze dragen hem als pyjama, maar net zo goed overdag om buiten te spelen. Ze kunnen er immers allerlei capriolen mee uithalen, terwijl ze niet hoeven op te letten of het allemaal wel ‘netjes’ is. Intussen hebben ze immers de leeftijd dat ze er op beginnen te letten dat hun onderbroek tijdens het spelen niet zichtbaar is en gaan ze daar bewuster mee om. Sinclair zorgt ervoor dat ze onbezorgd voluit kunnen spelen!
Hij gaat ook super makkelijk aan en uit, dus geen gedoe om naar toilet te gaan, of gauw om te kleden voor of na het zwemmen bijvoorbeeld.

Sinclair is a short romper with a babydoll-style bodice from Little Lizard King. It already existed for babies, but is now also available for girls up to 14 years old.
For babies it is a very fun style, but it works just fine for girls as well! My 7 and almost 10 year old daughters both love it!
They wear it as pajamas, but just as much during the day to play outside. After all, they can do all kinds of antics with it, while they do not have to pay attention to whether it is all ‘neat’. After all, they are now at the age that they start to make sure that their underpants are not visible during play and they are more aware of this. Sinclair ensures that they can play carefree in full!
It also goes on and off very easily, so no hassle to go to the toilet, or to change quickly before or after swimming, for example.

Als naaister is dit ook een gedroomd project, want het resultaat is schattig, maar het naait ook erg makkelijk en snel. Per romper spendeerde ik maximum drie kwartier, knippen inbegrepen!

As a seamstress, this is also a dream project, because the result is cute, but it also sews very easily and quickly. I spent a maximum of 45 minutes per romper, including cutting my fabrics!

Voor mijn 7-jarige naaide ik telkens maat 6 jaar, verlengd tot 7 jaar.
Voor mijn 9-jarige naaide ik telkens maat 7 jaar, verlengd tot 8 jaar.

Intussen rolde er ook nog eentje in een zebra-tricot onder mijn machine uit, zodat ze elk drie Sinclairs in de kast hebben momenteel. Van deze laatste heb ik (nog) geen foto’s.

In the meantime, another one rolled out in a zebra jersey under my machine, so they each have three Sinclairs in the closet at the moment. I do not (yet) have any photos of the latter.

Glastonbury (girls & women)

Sinds kort test ik patronen van Little Lizard King. Ik had al eerder met hun patronen gewerkt, maar nog nooit eerder meegedraaid in testing daar. Wat een toffe testomgeving! Iedereen is er super positief, en er is veel ruimte voor feedback. Als tester voel je je in ieder geval erg gewaardeerd en betrokken.

Recently I started testing patterns from Little Lizard King. I had worked with their patterns before but had never been involved in testing there before. What a great test environment! Everyone is very positive and nice, and there is a lot of room for feedback. In any case, as a tester you feel very appreciated and involved.

Nadat ik mee testte voor de Sinclair romper (een super tof patroontje, binnenkort meer daarover, ik zit wat achterop…), nam ik deel aan de test voor het Glastonbury patroon. En dat zowel voor kinderen als volwassenen.
Het leukste aan dit patroon? Dat je er meteen een hele outfit mee naait, want het bestaat uit een top en een rok. Voor de top kies je uit crop top of normale shirt en kan je gaan voor een simpele versie of een versie met een vals knopenpad. Voor de rok kan je dan weer uit lengte midi (halfweg de kuit) of maxi (tot op de enkel) kiezen, en ook daar kies je voor een eenvoudig model of een model met 1 of 2 ruches onderin.

After I tested for the Sinclair romper (a super cool pattern, more about that soon, I’m a bit behind …), I took part in the test for the Glastonbury pattern. And that for both children and adults.
The best thing about this pattern? That you immediately sew a whole outfit with it, because it consists of a top and a skirt. For the top you choose from crop top or regular shirt and you can go for a simple version or a version with a faux placket. For the skirt you can choose midi length (mid-calf) or maxi (to the ankle), and you can also choose between a simple model or a model with 1 or 2 ruffles at the bottom.

Voor mijn 9-jarige dochter, toch al echt een pré-tiener, maakte ik de crop top. De eenvoudige versie zonder knopenpad. De pasvorm is perfect, en het naait ook vlotjes. De nekboord en mouwboord zijn aangestikt met de ‘binding’methode (wie-o-wie kent de correcte Nederlandse benaming hiervoor?). Het topje is uiteraard in een rekbaar stofje, in mijn geval een eenvoudige, muntgroene jersey tricot. Ik naaide maat 7 jaar, verlengd tot maat 8 jaar.

For my 9-year-old daughter, already a pre-teen, I made the crop top. The simple version without button placket. The fit is perfect, and it sews smoothly too. The neckband and sleeve bands are stitched with the ‘binding’ method. The top is of course in a stretchy fabric, in my case a simple, mint green jersey. I sewed size 7 years, extended to size 8 years.

De rok is gemaakt van geweven stof, en dus niet rekbaar. Ik gebruikte een viscose. Ook hier ging ik voor de eenvoudigste versie. Je naait de zijnaden en vervolgens zet je de heupboord er aan. In die boord verwerk je een dikke elastische band. Ook daar maakte ik maatje 7 jaar, verlengd tot 8 jaar.

The skirt is made of woven fabric, so it is not stretchy. I used a viscose. Here too I went for the simplest version. You sew the side seams and then you put the waistband on. You process a thick elastic band in the waistband. There I also made size 7 years, extended to 8 years.

Voor mijn 7-jarige maakte ik de top in t-shirt lengte, en mét vals knopenpad. Deze keer in maatje 6 jaar, verlengd tot 7 jaar. Voor de rok koos ik de versie met 1 gerimpelde laag onderin. Je kan ook een versie met dubbele ruche maken.

For my 7-year-old I made the top in t-shirt length, and with faux placket. This time in size 6 years, extended to 7 years. For the skirt I chose the version with 1 gathered layer at the bottom. You can also make a double ruffle version.

Ik vind het heerlijk dat ik met 1 patroon twee verschillende outfits kan maken. Doordat je dezelfde stoffen gebruikt, matchen ze mooi, maar toch is het net even wat anders. Dat levert ook een leuke reeks foto’s op 🙂
De kat wou ook graag even mee op de foto…

I love that I can make two different outfits with one pattern. Because you can use the same fabrics, they match nicely, but are still slightly different. That also produces a nice series of photos 🙂

Ten slotte maakte ik ook de versie voor dames. De top, met vals knopenpad in crop top lengte, maakte ik in maatje 8. De rok maakte ik in maatje 12, maar lengte maat 8. Ik koos hier opnieuw voor 1 ruche onderaan. Als ik eens tijd te veel heb, maak ik er een top in t-shirtlengte bij, want met de crop top voel ik me niet helemaal in mijn sas 😉

Finally, I also made the version for ladies. The top, with false button placket in crop top length, I made in size 8. I made the skirt in size 12, but length size 8. I again chose 1 ruffle at the bottom. If I have too much time on my hands, I will make a top in t-shirt length, because with the crop top I do not feel completely comfortable 😉

Selfish Sewing: part 3

Ik was al lang opzoek naar een zomerse badjas. Eentje waarin ik me kan hullen, zonder het te warm te krijgen. Gewoon omdat ik het fijn vind om iets aan te hebben. En toen kwam ik het patroon van de Grab ’n Go van Rad Patterns tegen, dat (tijdelijk?) gratis beschikbaar was. Een heel basic patroon, net wat ik nodig had. Ik koos voor een heel luchtig mesh-stofje dat ik kocht via de webshop van Stoffen.net. Deze stof is intussen wel uitverkocht.

I was looking for a summer bathrobe for a long time. One in which I can wrap myself, without it being to warm. Just because I like wearing something. And then I came across the pattern of the Grab ’n Go from Rad Patterns, which was (temporarily?) available for free. A very basic pattern, just what I needed. I chose a very light mesh fabric that I bought through the Stoffen.net webshop. This fabric has since sold out.

Dit is zeker en vast één van mijn snelste naaisels ooit, van knippen tot klaar in minder dan een half uur! En dat ondanks de stof waarmee ik werkte, die toch niet zo evident is. Maar het houdt letterlijk niet meer in dan de voorpanden aan het achterpand zetten bij de schoudernaad, de mouwen inzetten en vervolgens de zijnaden dicht naaien. Ik deed dit alles met mijn overlock. Ik lockte zowel de mouwzoom als alle andere randen, en nogmaals omzomen vond ik in dit geval overbodig. Het zou wellicht eerder tegen- dan meegewerkt hebben door de aard van de stof en uiteindelijk zou je nauwelijks het verschil merken. Ik maakte maatje S.

This is certainly one of my fastest sews ever, from cutting to ready in less than half an hour! And that despite the material I worked with, which is not that obvious. But it literally means no more than matching the front pieces to the back at the shoulder seam, inserting the sleeves and then stitching the side seams shut. I did all this with my overlock. I locked both the sleeve hem and all other edges, and didn’t think hemming was necessary in this case. It would perhaps have been more likely to have worked against me because of the nature of the material and in the end you would hardly notice the difference. I made size S.

Onlangs kocht ik in “De Stoffenknop” te Merelbeke een overschotje ‘pearl blue’. Net genoeg om een losse top met spaghetti-bandjes uit te krijgen. Als patroon gebruikte ik het damespatroon van de Sorrento jurk van Little Lizard King. Ik gebruikte echter enkel de patroondelen voor het bovenlijf, die ik verlengde zodat het net tot op mijn heupen valt.

Recently I bought a left-over piece of ‘pearl blue’ in “De Stoffenknop” in Merelbeke. Just enough to create a loose top with spaghetti straps. As a pattern I used the women’s pattern of the Sorrento dress by Little Lizard King. However, I only used the pattern parts for the upper body, which I extended so that it just falls to my hips.

Zo creëerde ik een heerlijk luchtig topje, ideaal voor warme dagen, en leuk te combineren met een jeansbroek of rok.

This way I created a wonderfully airy top, ideal for warm days, and nice to combine with jeans or a skirt.
