Ellie&Mac Spring Event – Breezy Dress

De lente lonkt. Na een sneeuwloze en grauwe, winderige winter, kijk ik stiekem toch uit naar de eerste zonnestralen… Het fluiten van de vogels laat ’s ochtends alvast vermoeden dat ze op komst is, de lente. En dus is het tijd om ook naai-gewijs het volgende seizoen in te luiden. Dat hadden ze ook bij Ellie&Mac in de gaten.

Spring is coming. After a snowless and gray, windy winter, I secretly look forward to the first rays of the sun … The whistling of the birds in the morning already suggests that she is coming, spring. And so it is time to start the next season sewing-wise. They also realized that at Ellie & Mac, with their spring dress event.

Voor dit project koos ik voor de Breezy-jurk. Uit pure nostalgie eigenlijk, want dit is het allereerste patroon van Ellie&Mac voor dames dat ik ooit voor mezelf naaide. Het gaf me toen zo’n boost en het nodige zelfvertrouwen om sedert dien niet enkel voor mijn dochters te naaien, maar ook voor mezelf. En dat kleedje zelf komt ook nu nog geregeld uit de kast. Omdat dit kleedje zo eenvoudig is, knipte ik er meteen twee.

For this project I chose the Breezy dress. Out of pure nostalgia actually, because this is the very first Ellie & Mac pattern for women that I ever sewed for myself. It gave me such a boost and the necessary self-confidence to sew not only for my daughters, but also for myself. And that dress itself still comes out of the closet regularly. Because this dress is so simple, I immediately cut two.

Voor het eerste koos ik een stofpaneel van Stenzo dat ik onlangs tijdens het naaiweekend aanschafte bij ’t Stofuiltje.
In het rokdeel gaat heel wat stof, aangezien ik voor de langste versie koos, en dus knipte ik bij gebrek aan stof het achterpand in twee delen. Uit de restjes kreeg ik nog net de korte mouwen geknipt.
De zoom van de rok is langer voor- en achteraan en korter aan de zijkanten, wat dit kleedje toch net een origineler tintje geeft dan de gewone rechte zoom.

For the first one, I chose a Stenzo fabric panel that I recently purchased at ’t Stofuiltje during the past sewing weekend.
There is a lot of fabric in the skirt part, since I chose the longest version, so I cut the back part in two due to lack of fabric. I just got the short sleeves cut from the leftovers.
The hem of the skirt is longer at the front and back and shorter at the sides, which gives this dress a more original touch than the regular straight hem.

Voor de tweede versie koos ik een kleurrijke stof van ZNOK (genaamd Asia Black, niet langer verkrijgbaar), gekocht via de webshop van Hazeltjes Stoffen voor het rokdeel. Ik combineerde dit met een zwarte katoen tricot voor het bovenlijfje. Deze keer knipte ik drie-kwarts-mouwen.

For the second version I chose a colorful fabric from ZNOK called Asia Black (not available anymore), purchased via the Hazeltjes Stoffen webshop, for the skirt part. I combined this with a black cotton jersey for the bodice. This time I cut three quartz sleeves.

Mijn kleerkast is alvast alweer aangevuld met twee zeer draagbare kleedjes, die me de komende lente zeker van pas zullen komen!
Op naar het volgende project 🙂

I love the 90’s

Ellie&Mac heeft intussen al heel wat patronen in de webshop. Ik durf niet te tellen hoeveel ik er heb, en hoeveel patronen ik reeds uittestte…

Ellie & Mac already has a lot of patterns in the webshop. I dare not count how many I have and how many patterns I have already tested …

Maar natuurlijk leer je ook als ontwerpster bij, en verandert de aanpak naarmate je meer ervaring hebt. Daarom herbekijken ze bij Ellie&Mac geregeld hun (oudere) patronen, en worden deze aan een hertesting onderworpen.

But of course you also learn as a designer, and your approach changes as you have more experience. That is why they regularly review their (older) patterns at Ellie & Mac, and they are re-tested.

Zo ook het patroon van de “I love the 90’s Dress“. Dat kreeg de voorbije weken een grondige update, en wordt dus nu ge-re-released 🙂

Een aantal zaken werd aangepast. Zakken werden toegevoegd aan het patroon, hoera!
Ik was van plan deze uit te testen, maar wegens ziekte hield ik het uiteindelijk toch bij de simpelste versie, zonder zakken dus.
Bij het achterpand had je voorheen de keuze tussen een gebogen naad en een rechte naad. De laatste werd weggelaten, omdat deze zorgde voor een minder flatterende achterkant. Ook de algemene pasvorm werd bijgestuurd waar nodig.
Ten slotte werd in de handleiding ook een toevoeging gedaan, door aan de onderkant van het voorpand te werken met elastiek, zodat het kleedje mooier aflijnt.

A number of things have been adjusted. Pockets were added to the pattern, hurray!
I was planning to test this, but due to illness I ended up with the simplest version, so without pockets.
At the back you previously had the choice between a curved seam and a straight seam. The latter was omitted because it caused a less flattering back view. The general fit was also adjusted where necessary.
Finally, an addition was also made in the manual by working with elastic at the bottom of the front bodice, so that the dress has a more pronounced fit.

Hierboven zien jullie alvast mijn finale versie, die dus volgens het vernieuwde patroon en handleiding is gemaakt.

Ik dacht steeds dat dit de perfecte strandjurk was, met een of ander luchtig stofje en mouwloos of met korte mouwen. Maar zoals je ziet, kan het ook perfect met een jacquard-jersey en lange mouwen! Panty of legging eronder, laars aan, en je bent klaar voor het frissere herfstweer!

I always thought this was the perfect dress when going to the beach, with some airy fabric and sleeveless or with short sleeves. But as you can see, it is also perfect with a jacquard jersey and long sleeves! Tights or leggings underneath, put on your boots, and you’re ready for the cooler autumn weather!

Winter Pinspiration

Joepie, het is weer ‘pinspiration’-tijd!
Blijft een leuke uitdaging, vind ik: op pinterest (of elders) op zoek gaan naar een kledingstuk dat je aanspreekt, en dit namaken. In mijn geval door gebruik te maken van een patroon van Ellie&Mac.
Soms is het voor de hand liggend, en maak ik het kledingstuk na door het bestaande patroon te knippen. Soms moet je een patroon ‘hacken’: je gaat dan aanpassingen doen om het patroon te kunnen gebruiken naar eigen inspiratie.

Yes, it’s pinspiration time again!
For me, this remains such a fun challenge: to look for something that appeals to you on pinterest (or elsewhere), and to imitate this. In my case by using an Ellie & Mac pattern.
Sometimes it’s obvious, and you copy the garment by cutting the existing pattern. Sometimes you have to ‘hack’ a pattern: you will then make adjustments to be able to use the pattern to your own inspiration.

Ik koos deze keer een afbeelding van een kledingstuk waarbij ik meteen aan de ‘to the point dress’ moest denken. Bij mijn inspiratie-foto is de band onderaan echter asymmetrisch, en is er een kraag aanwezig. Dus kon ik wel vertrekken van het bestaande patroon, maar was een ‘hack’ noodzakelijk.

This time I chose an image of a piece of clothing where I immediately thought of the ‘to the point dress’. In my inspiration photo, however, the band at the bottom is asymmetrical, and there is a collar present. So I could start from the existing pattern, but a ‘hack’ was necessary.

Ik laat jullie even meekijken hoe ik het heb aangepakt!

Let me share with you how I tried to hack the pattern to achieve the desired look.

Ik nam eerst het rokdeel over op patroonpapier, en hertekende daarbij de rand onderaan, zodat deze asymmetrisch werd.

I first copied the skirt part on pattern paper, redesigning the border at the bottom so that it became asymmetrical.

Voor de kraag tekende ik een rechthoek, waarbij de lengte ongeveer 12 à 13 cm langer was dan de lengte van de neklijn.

I drew a rectangle for the collar, the length of which was 5 inches longer than the length of the neckline.

Door mijn nieuwe patroondelen om te vouwen, knipte ik alle delen uit. De patroondelen voor het lijfje (met rokdeel) knipte ik gespiegeld.

By folding over my new pattern parts, I cut out all the parts. I cut the pattern parts for the bodice (with skirt part) mirrored.

Voor het creëren van de kraag verknipte ik mijn patroondeel om te kunnen colourblocken (zie versie 1). Dan verkrijg je vier delen, die je afwisselend (een korter deel, gevolgd door een langer en zo tot een cirkel) aan elkaar gaat zetten. Bij mijn tweede versie knipte ik de kraag uit 1 stof, en had ik dus slechts twee delen die ik aan elkaar zette. (zie versie 2)

To create the collar I cut up my pattern part to be able to color block (see version 1). Then you get four parts, which you will alternate (a shorter part, followed by a longer and so to a circle) put together. In my second version I cut the collar from 1 fabric, so I only had two parts that I had to attatch. (see version 2)

These were all the parts when everything had been cut out.

Ik begon met het kraagdeel. Ik zette alle delen aan elkaar (stof met de rechte kant tegen elkaar) aan de korte zijdes, en wisselde een korter deel telkens af met aan langer, tot ik een doorlopende band had.
Dan naaide ik aan een kant over de lange zijde heen. De stof ligt hierbij nog steeds met de rechte kanten op elkaar. Bij de versie met colour block vouwde ik het korte deel doormidden. Aan beide kanten van het langere deel, zie je dus de helft van het kortere deel liggen.
Je draait nu de kraag naar buiten, zodat de goede kant van de stof zichtbaar is. Ik topstitchte de naden voor een nettere afwerking.

I started by sewing the collar. You first sew the parts together along the short sides. When colorblocking, you alternate. When all the short sides are sewn together (with the fabrics laying with the right sides together), you get a continuous circle.
Then I sewed over the long side on one side. The fabric still lies with right sides together. For the color block version, I folded the short part in half widthwise. So you see half of the shorter part on both sides of the longer part.
You now turn the cowl-piece inside out, with the right sides on the outside, and topstitch.

Hierna naaide ik eerst de randen aan het rokdeel van voor- en achterpand. Dat is even opletten dat je het juiste deel neemt, maar het naaien zelf is eenvoudiger dan bij het originele patroon, omdat je geen ‘v’ hoeft te naaien!

After this I first sewed the edges on the skirt part of the front and backpanel. You need to be careful to you take the correct part, but the sewing itself is easier than with the original pattern, because you do not have to sew a “v”!

Vervolgens naai je de schoudernaden, zet je de mouwen in en sluit je de zijnaden, zoals je in de handleiding bij het patroon kan volgen.

Next, sew the shoulder seams, insert the sleeves and close the side seams, as you can follow in the manual that comes with the pattern.

Ten slotte nog het kraagdeel. Ik zocht eerst het midden van de lange, nog open, zijde en stak er een naald om het midden te markeren.
Mijn kledingstuk lag met de rechte kanten naar binnen toe. Het kraagdeel liet ik als het ware in het kleedje zakken, waarbij de gesloten kant naar onder ligt en dus in het kleedje verdwijnt.
Nu legde ik de kraag tegen de neklijn, zodat de lange open zijde samen gaat vallen met de neklijn. Ik werkte vanuit het midden van het kraagdeel naar de zijkanten toe.
Het midden van het kraagdeel liet ik samenvallen met de schoudernaad. Ik speldde dan eerst de ene zijde, aan de linkerkant, en vervolgens de rechterzijde. Dit alles zonder het kraagdeel op te rekken. De uiteindes van het kraagdeel zullen mekaar automatisch overlappen. Eens alles gespeld was, zette ik het kraagdeel vast met de overlockmachine.

Finally, the collar part. First I searched for the center of the long, still open, side and used a needle to mark the center.
My dress lay with the straight sides inwards. As it were, I lowered the collar part into the dress, with the closed side lying down and disappearing into the dress.
Now I matched the collars open side with the neckline. I worked towards the sides from the middle of the collar part.
I let the middle of the collar part coincide with the shoulder seam on the right. I first pinned one side, to the left, and then to the right. All this without stretching the collar part. The ends of the collar part will automatically overlap. Once everything was pinned, I secured the collar part to the neckline with my overlock machine.

Enkel nog zomen, en dan: klaar!

Only hems, and then: done!

Dit was mijn testversie. Voor de pinspiration-uitdaging maakte ik nog een tweede, langere versie (versie 1 was mini-dress-lengte, en viel wat kort uit naar mijn zin).

This was my try-out-version. For my pinspiration challenge, I made a second one. That one has a uni-coloured collar and is dress length, instead of tunic length.

The collared shirt and dress

Al jaren ben ik jaloers wanneer ik naaisters rondom mij hemdjes zie naaien. Om de één of andere reden durfde ik het nooit goed om eraan te beginnen. Het knopenpad, de kraag, … het schrok me toch steeds een beetje af. Tot nu!
Ik testte mee aan het nieuwe patroon van Winter Wear Designs: the collared shirt and dress. En ik ben zo blij dat ik eindelijk die stap durfde zetten! Helemaal verliefd op deze jurkjes, en ook mijn oudste dochter ‘bestelde’ er meteen eentje!
Ik dacht eerst dat het misschien wat ‘stijf’ zou zijn voor mijn speelse dochter, maar dat bleek een fout idee van mij!

I have been jealous for years when I see seamstresses sewing shirts around me. For some reason I never dared to start. The buttonpad, the collar, … it always frightened me a bit. Until now!
I tested the new pattern of Winter Wear Designs: the collared shirt and dress. And I am so happy that I finally dared to take that step! Totally in love with these dresses, and my oldest daughter ‘ordered’ one right away too!
At first I thought it might be a bit ‘stiff’ for my playful daughter, but that turned out to be a wrong idea of mine!

Mijn eerste versie maakte ik in een jeansblauw, soepel katoentje, geen idee meer waar ik het vandaan heb gehaald. Met behulp van de duidelijke handleiding was het eigenlijk simpel… Waar heb ik toch al die tijd schrik voor gehad?
Het resultaat is ook echt wel af. Niemand die zal denken dat dit een zelf gemaakt jurkje is.
Dit is de versie met mouwen tot de elleboog en een traditionele kraag. Je kan er ook voor kiezen om een ‘mandarin collar’ te maken, dan gebruik je enkel het opstaande deeltje, en niet de kraag. Ik maakte het zonder elastiek in de taille. Die optie heb je wel in het patroon. Ik vind het echter wel leuk de vrijheid te hebben: wanneer ze gewoon naar school gaat, of gaat spelen, dan is die ‘ruimte’ wel fijn. Maar wil ik het toch wat ‘gekleder’, dan werk ik het af met een riem. De testversie leverde ook meteen een draagbaar kleedje op, hoe leuk is dat! Dit is maatje 5 jaar, maar verlengd tot maat 6 jaar.

I made my first version in a jeansblue, supple cotton, no idea where I got it from. With the help of the clear manual it was actually simple … What have I been scared of all this time?
The result is really awesome. Nobody will think that this is a self-made dress.
This is the version with sleeves up to the elbow and a traditional collar. You can also choose to make a ‘mandarin collar’, then you only use the collar stand, and not the collar. I made it without elastic at the waist. You do have that option in the pattern. I do, however, like to have the freedom: if she just goes to school or plays, then that ‘extra space’ is nice. But if I want it to be a bit ‘dressier’, then I finish it with a belt. The test version also immediately produced a wearable dress, how nice is that! This is size 5 years, but extended to size 6 years.

In de handleiding van het patroon zitten, naast duidelijke tekst en tekeningen én foto’s ook video’s verwerkt, zodat je echt telkens weer een stapje verder kan gaan. Zo bleef ik voor mijn kleedjes nog weg van mouwboorden met split, maar je hebt dus wel die optie!
Ook opties zijn een lusje in de halslijn binnenin, opgestikte zakken én het mooie is ook dat dit patroon voor zowel meisjes als jongens gemaakt is. Voor jongenshemden zit er een aangepast patroondeel in dat de schouderlijn van jongens volgt. Voor mijn finale versie koos ik de paneelstof ‘Fox Woods’ in katoen van Michael Miller. Die lag al jaren in mijn voorraad… Deze keer met 1 opgestikt borstzakje en korte mouw, maar verder met dezelfde opties als mijn testkleedje.
Wij zijn grote fan!

In addition to clear text and drawings and photos, the manual of the pattern also contains videos, so that you can always go one step further. This time I stayed away from sleeves with buttoned cuffs for my dresses, but the option is included in the pattern!
Options are also a loop in the neckline inside, stitched-on pockets and the great thing is that this pattern is made for both girls and boys. For boys ‘shirts there is an adjusted pattern piece (the back yoke) that follows the boys’ shoulder line. For my final version I chose the ‘Fox Woods’ panel fabric in cotton by Michael Miller. It had been in my stock for years … This time with 1 stitched-on breast pocket and short sleeves, but otherwise with the same options as my test dress.
We are a big fan!

Firecracker Dolman

Na de Dynamite Dolman voor dames, testte ik met veel plezier ook mee voor de versie voor kinderen: de Lil’ Firecracker Dolman.
Het ontwerp is zo eenvoudig, en toch geniaal!
Het is zo makkelijk en snel te maken, dat iedereen ermee aan de slag kan. Zelfs absolute beginners of zij die echt weinig tijd hebben. Dit is zo’n projectje dat bijna niet mis kan gaan en telkens weer een leuk resultaat oplevert!

After the Dynamite Dolman for women, I happily tested for the children’s version: the Lil ‘Firecracker Dolman.
The design is so simple, and yet ingenious!
It is so easy and quick to make that everyone can get started. Even absolute beginners or those who really have limited time. This is a project that can hardly go wrong and always produces a nice result!

Ik maakte er intussen drie, en toon ze jullie hier graag!

In the meantime I have made three, and I would like to show them to you here!

Voor mijn jongste maakte ik twee versies in sweaterstof. Lekker warm en ultra-zacht. Ideaal met de winter in aantocht!
Al bij de eerste pasbeurt wou ze het kleedje niet meer uit! “Mag ik er in slapen? Please?!?”
Sowieso een hit dus!

For my youngest I made two versions in sweater fabric. Nice and warm and ultra-soft. Ideal with the winter approaching!
Already at the first fitting she did not want to get rid of it! “Can I sleep in it? Please?!?”
A hit in any case!

De eerste testversie bouwde ik om naar een trui en rokje. Dit is de medium wing versie, die ik initieel maakte als kleedje. Ik knipte na de eerste pasbeurt het rokdeel los en zette er een band aan, net als aan de onderkant van het lijfje.

I converted the first test version to a sweater and skirt. This is the medium wing version, which I initially made as a dress. At that point, the pattern still needed some tweaks. After the first fitting I have cut the skirt off and banded it, just like the bottom of the bodice.

Mijn tweede versie is de medium wing mini-jurk. Ik koos hiervoor een heerlijk stofje dat ik kocht in de webshop van naaiplezier.nl. Het is een Brushed French Terry met de naam Berry Foxes. Bij de webshop daar is hij niet meer verkrijgbaar, maar ik vond hem wel nog online hier: https://www.stoffolino.de/french-terry-berry-foxes.html
Dit is maatje 5, verlengd tot maat 6. Ik koos hier voor de crew neckline.

My second version is the medium wing mini dress. I chose a lovely and sweet fabric for this that I bought in the webshop of naaiplezier.nl. It is a Brushed French Terry with the name Berry Foxes. This is size 5, extended to size 6. I chose the crew neckline here.

Elke keer als ze de Firecracker aandeed, veranderde ze instant in een kleine diva met grote sterallures, maar dan wel op haar eigen schattige manier 🙂

Every time she puts on the Firecracker, she instantly changes into a small diva with big star allures, but in her own cute way 🙂

Voor de oudste maakte ik een shirt voor de dansles, want ook daar leent de Firecracker zich prima voor.

For my oldest, I made a shirt for dance class, because the Firecracker is also very suitable for that.

Voor deze versie koos ik voor een dunne tricot met zebraprint.
Ik maakte de Shortie Shirt versie met mega wing-mouwen. Ik koos voor de bootnek. Blije dochter, want ze wou al heel lang zo’n hippe t-shirt voor de dansles!

For this version I opted for a thin jersey with zebra print.
I made the Shortie Shirt version with mega wing sleeves. I chose the boat neck. Happy daughter, because she wanted a hip t-shirt for a long time for the dance class!

Deze is maat 7, zonder verdere aanpassingen.
