How to use the Oasis Swimsuit top to create a maxidress

So, a couple of weeks ago, I was scrolling through some webshops, and encountered a dress I just had to try and recreate… I just knew there would be an Ellie&Mac pattern that I could use as a base. Someone in the Ellie&Mac Facebook Group brought the Oasis Swimsuit to my attention. It was the perfect starting point to make my pinspiration come true!

I printed the Oasis Swimsuit bodice, style 1, size SM and first made a muslin.
For the skirt I added approx. 38″ in length. For the first tier, I drew two rectangles of 9″ 7/8 by 27″1/2.
For the middle tier, I drew three rectangles of 13″6/8 by 27″1/2. For the last tier, I have cut four rectangles of 16″ by 27″1/2.
After trying on my muslin, I noticed the weight of the skirt was pulling everything down. So for my final attempt, I adjusted the pattern pieces just a smidge, as you can see on the pictures below. I lengthened the side seam, so the bodice comes up a little higher on the sides. I added 1″ on the front bodice, and 1/2″ on the side seam of the back bodice.

Constructing the bodice

To construct the bodice, I have cut out the front bodice twice, as you are supposed to. I wanted it to be fully lined, to give it more stability and coverage, and to get a clean finish on the strap bands. So I cut out the back bodice twice (mirrored), instead of only once. I also cut out the style 1 neckband and the two straps that wrap around your body.
I have not cut out the hem binding, since I was attatching a skirt.

You first sew gathering stitches on the side seam of the front bodice. So I did on both front bodice pieces. I gathered the sides to match the back bodice parts. Then I attached the back bodice parts to both of my front bodice parts, creating to identical pieces.

I placed those pieces on top of each other, right sides together, to stitch the sloping sides together, that will go under the armpit.
After doing so, I have sewn the loops (4 of them, each 2″ by 3″).
I folded my bodice open, and placed the loops on the marks I had made. Then folded the bodice pieces back, right sides together, so the loops were sandwiched in between. I did a stay-stitch and then stitched the sides together.
I turned the bodice inside out.

Time to attach the neck binding!

And on to the last part of the bodice construction: the straps. I used the straps, as the manual says, to create the third loop. You use the binding method again to create the straps.

Creating the skirt

To create the skirt, you first sew the two top tiers together along the short sides, to create a continuous loop.
You do the same for the three middle tier pieces, and repeat your actions with the four pieces of the bottom tier.

Next I hemmed the bottom tier. Then I sewed gathering threads at the top of that tier. I gathered it to match the length of the middle tier, and I sewed the bottom tier to the middle one. Now you sew gathering threads on top of the middle tier, gather it to match the top tier, and sew those together as well.

At the top of the top tier I sewed an elastic band. I cut that elastic 1/2″ shorter than my waist measurements, and overlapped another 1″. This so that the elastic can support the weight of the skirt part. I divided the elastic into four equal parts, and did the same with the skirt part. Then I sewed the elastic into the skirt with a zigzag stitch, which also gathered the last top layer.

Attatching the bodice and skirt

To attatch the bodice to the skirt, I marked the middle of the front bodice, as well as the middle of the skirt.
I aligned the raw edge of the bodice with the raw edge of the skirt, laying them right sides together.
Without stretching, I now pinned the rest of the bodice to the skirt. Your bodice will not be pinned all around the skirt, there will be a part of the skirts raw edge still visible. I used my serger the sew all around the skirt opening, whilst attatching the bodice to it.

Now to get rid of that raw edge on the back and finish my dress!
I pulled the bodice up, now showing how the dress will look on front. I folded the seam allowance down, and pinned it all around the skirt opening. All I now had to do, was stitch it secure with a zigzag stitch. On the front, this helps for extra stability, and on the back, you this way get a clean finish.

Et voila: I made my pinspiration come true, thanks to Ellie&Mac 🙂
An additional advantage of the Oasis Swimsuit pattern is that you can easily add padding to the bodice (it’s all in the manual!), because the open back does not really go well with a bra of course…

I love this dress, although I have no occasion to wear it to…
But I now have it ready and waiting for action 🙂

Sofilantjes – Aureum

Wat ik het leukste vind aan dit nieuwe patroon? Het feit dat dit patroon niet beschikt over 1 racerback optie, maar er maar liefst vier verschillende aanbiedt! Je kan dus eindeloos gaan variëren…

What I like the most about this new pattern? The fact that this pattern does not have 1 racerback option, but offers no less than four different ones! So you can vary endlessly …

Voor mijn probeerversie maakte ik eerst een versie in t-shirt-lengte. Ik ben fan van topjes die lang vallen, dus dat zit alvast snor! Vooraan ziet het er uit als een eerder ‘gewone’ zomerse top, maar dan die achterkant… Jullie weten het ondertussen al, ik heb iets met mooie details op de rug. En toen kwam dit patroon uit….
Voor mijn eerste versie koos ik voor de druppelvormige uitsparing (optie B). Om het rugdetail nog wat extra in de verf te zetten (of wat dacht je?) gebruikte ik een stukje rekbaar kant, een overschotje dat ik nog had liggen van toen ik de Wrapped-in-love van Ellie&Mac maakte.

For my trial version, I first made a t-shirt-length version. I’m a fan of tops that fall long, so that’s great! At the front it looks like a rather ‘normal’ summer top, but then that back … You already know, I have something with nice details on the back. And then this pattern came out ….
For my first version I opted for the teardrop-shaped keyhole (option B). To emphasize the back detail (or what do you think?) I used a piece of stretchy lace, which was left over from when I made Ellie & Mac’s Wrapped-in-love.

Dit patroon zit eigenlijk best eenvoudig in elkaar! De moeilijkheid zit hem een beetje in het aanzetten van de rekbare biaisband. Dat is de eerste keer toch wel even zoeken, herinner ik me… Ik verdeelde de neklijn en armsgaten telkens in vier gelijke delen, net als de biaisbanden die ik moest aanzetten. Een beetje zoals bij het aanzetten van een heupboord of mouwboord dus. Dat werkte voor mij prima. Ik maakte wel gebruik van voorgevormde rekbare biais, maar je kan deze dus ook zelf maken. De nodige info om dat alles tot een goed einde te brengen, staat netjes omschreven in de handleiding bij het patroon. (Die handleiding is overigens in het Nederlands, Engels en Frans beschikbaar!)
Ik maakte maat 40, verbreed naar maat 44 voor de heupen.

This pattern is actually quite simple! The difficulty is in putting on the stretchy bias tape. If it is your first time, it’s a little fiddly, as I remeber… I divided the neckline and armholes into four equal parts, just like the bias tapes I had to put on. A bit like when putting on a waistband or neckband. That worked fine for me. I did use pre-formed stretch bias, but you can also make it yourself. The necessary information to complete all this is neatly described in the manual with the pattern. (This manual is available in Dutch, English and French!)
I made size 40, widened to size 44 for the hips.

Terwijl ik het t-shirt naaide, rees in mijn hoofd de vraag ‘Hoe zou de combinatie met een Solis cirkelrok er uit zien?’. Tja, dat moest ik dus gaan proberen… 🙂
Ik toon jullie hieronder hoe ik het aanpakte om dat mooie rugdetail van de Aureum in te passen op het patroon van de Solis. Vooral het bovenlijfje vraagt wat aanpassingen.

As I was sewing the t-shirt, the question ‘What would the combination with a Solis circle skirt look like?’ arose. Well, I had to try that … 🙂
I will show you below how I approached to fit that beautiful back detail of the Aureum into the pattern of the Solis. Especially the bodice requires some adjustments.

Eerst legde ik de patroondelen van het bovenlijfje van de Solis bovenop het patroondeel van de Aereum. Ik zorgde ervoor dat de punten bovenaan de zijnaad (net onder je oksel dus) samen vielen. Ik nam dan de zijnaad en de onderkant van het patroondeel van de Solis over op dat van de Aureum.
Zoals je kan zien op de foto’s hieronder valt de naad middenvoor en middenachter dan nog steeds niet helemaal samen. Dat gaf echter geen problemen achteraf, bij het aanzetten van de cirkelrok. In de taille zit het kleedje nu iets ruimer dan de Solis, maar het is zeker niet storend!

First, I put the pattern pieces of the torso of the Solis on top of the pattern part of the Aereum. I made sure that the points at the top of the side seam (just below your armpit) coincided. I then copied the side seam and the bottom of the pattern part of the Solis to that of the Aureum.
As you can see in the pictures below, the seam mid front and mid back still doesn’t quite coincide. However, that did not cause any problems afterwards, when putting on the circle skirt. At the waist, the dress is now slightly more spacious than the Solis, but it is certainly not disturbing!

Ik verknipte het patroon en nadien mijn stof. Voor het rugdetail koos ik voor weer een ander overschotje stretch kant. Aan die patroondelen hoefde ik niets te veranderen. Deze keer koos ik voor de overlappende uitsparing (optie C).
En verder knipte ik gewoon de cirkelrok van de Solis. En that’s it!
Meer houdt deze hack echt niet in… Voor het lijfje volgde ik de instructies van de Aureum, en nadien zette ik de cirkelrok eraan.
Ik ben super tevreden over het resultaat!

I cut the pattern accordingly and then my fabric. For the back detail I chose yet another leftover stretch lace. I did not have to change anything about those pattern parts. This time I chose the overlapping keyhole (option C).
And then I just cut out the circle skirt from the Solis. And that’s it!
There’s nothing more to this hack really… For the bodice, I followed the instructions of the Aureum, and after that I put on the circle skirt.
I am very satisfied with the result!

De witte stof met blauwe rozen is niet langer verkrijgbaar. De stof is scuba, en dus zo goed als kreukvrij.
De zwarte stof met roze bloemetjes is een viscosejersey, maar momenteel uitverkocht op de webshop van Stoffen.net.
De zwarte stretch kant is ook niet meer verkrijgbaar en haalde ik eveneens bij de webshop van Stoffen.net.
De jeansblauwe stretch kant komt van Driessen. Deze is nog wel verkrijgbaar.

The white fabric with blue roses is no longer available. The fabric is scuba, and therefore virtually wrinkle-free.
The black fabric with pink flowers is a viscose jersey, but is currently sold out at the Stoffen.net webshop.
The black stretch lace is also no longer available and I also got it from the Stoffen.net webshop.
The jeans blue stretch lace comes from Driessen. This is still available.

Fall in Love Sweater

Hoog tijd dat ik deze eens ga delen! Ik naaide ze immers al in januari, toen ik op Stikking Together weekend ging. Toch vond ik pas vandaag de tijd om foto’s te nemen van mijn tweede versie…

Time to share this one! After all, I sewed them back in January when I went on Stikking Together weekend. Still, I only found time to take pictures of my second version today …

Dit is de Fall in Love sweater. Ik werd meteen verliefd op dit patroon, om de naam alleen al 🙂
Laat je echter niet misleiden door het woord ‘Fall’, want deze trui kan je ook buiten het herfstseizoen aan natuurlijk! Het is een eenvoudige trui met aangezette mouwen. Eenvoudig, want er zijn niet veel patroondelen en alles spreekt voor zich. Dit was het perfecte naaiproject voor de laatste dag van het naaiweekend. Dan begin je alvast te denken aan opruimen, maar wil je er toch nog graag minstens 1 kledingstuk afwerken. In mijn geval werden het er zelfs nog twee, want met stof knippen inbegrepen bleef ik ruim onder een uur!

This is the Fall in Love sweater. I immediately fell in love with this pattern, just for the name 🙂
Do not be fooled by the word ‘Fall’, because you can also wear this sweater outside the fall season of course! It is a simple sweater with attached sleeves. Simple, because there are not many pattern parts and everything speaks for itself. This was the perfect sewing project for the last day of the sewing weekend. You know, when you start thinking about tidying up, but you still want to finish at least 1 item of clothing. In my case there were even two more, because with fabric cutting included I stayed well under an hour!

De eerste versie met een sweaterstof die ik aankocht in De Stoffenknop. Het is heerlijk zacht aan de binnenzijde, en heeft prachtige herfstkleuren! Ik maakte er ook voor Laure en Hanne eentje. Die versies kan je hier zien. Eigenlijk kwam ik net een stukje te kort, maar gelukkig kon ik nog een lapje overkopen van @casaimani (Bedankt Ann!). Blijkbaar heb ik geen foto’s van de drie versies, dus als ik nog ergens een beetje tijd kan vinden… .

The first version with a sweater fabric that I bought in De Stoffenknop. It is wonderfully soft on the inside, and has beautiful autumn colors! I also made one for Laure and Hanne. You can see those versions here. Actually I was just a bit short, but luckily I was able to buy another piece from @casaimani (Thanks Ann!). Apparently I don’t have pictures of the three versions, so if I can find a little time somewhere ….

De tweede trui – in ook alweer heerlijke herfstkleuren – is gemaakt van een French Terry, en dus geschikter voor tussenseizoenen of zelfs een frisse zomerdag.
De stof kocht ik via de webshop van Ansje Handmade en heeft de naam ‘Jungle leaves navy blue’. Jammer genoeg niet langer verkrijgbaar.

The second sweater – again in lovely autumn colors – is made from a French Terry, making it more suitable for in-between seasons or even a cool summer day.
I bought the fabric through the Ansje Handmade webshop and has the name ‘Jungle leaves navy blue’. Unfortunately no longer available.

Ik vind de aansluitende pasvorm aangenaam, maar je kan hem gerust een maat groter maken als je eerder fan bent van een ‘relaxed fit’. Op naaiweekend knipte ik er twee en nam nadien plaats achter de naaimachine. Als ik deze trui nog eens maak, wat zeker zal gebeuren, ga ik de mouwen een cm of twee langer maken. Zeker na een wasbeurt zijn ze een tikkeltje te kort naar mijn smaak.

I like the slim fit, but you can easily make it a size bigger if you are a fan of a more ‘relaxed fit’. On sewing weekend I cut two and then took a seat behind the sewing machine. If I make this sweater again, which will definitely happen, I’m going to make the sleeves an inch or two longer. Especially after a wash, they are a bit too short for my taste.

Sofiona – Tide Halter Dress

In januari kon ik genieten van een naaiweekendje georganiseerd door mijn schoonzus. Van Corona was toen nog geen sprake. Al hielden we het gros van de tijd wel enige afstand van elkaar, elk met onze eigen projectjes en machines. Maar het moest niet, en het gonsde van gezelligheid. Wat lijkt dat nu een eeuwigheid geleden…

In January I enjoyed a sewing weekend organized by my sister-in-law. At that time there was no question of Corona. Although most of the time we kept some distance from each other, each with our own projects and machines, we would occasionaly leave our own machines to admire what others were making, and there was a buzz of fun. It seems like an eternity ago …

Om het allemaal een extra vrolijke noot te geven, speelden we een naai-bingo. Wie heeft er het eerst gevloekt? Een speldje laten vallen? In haar vinger geprikt? Een tornmesje nodig gehad?

To give it all an extra happy note, we played a sewing bingo. Who cursed first? Dropped a pin? Pricked her finger? Needed a seam ripper? …

Wie een rij of een kolom kon vervolledigen, mocht een prijs kiezen op de rijkelijk gevulde prijzentafel. Ik koos onder andere voor een waardebon van Sofiona Designs. Ik had van deze ontwerpster nog geen enkel patroon in mijn bezit.
Achteraf koos ik dit patroon, de Tide Halter Dressom mee aan de slag te gaan.

Anyone who could complete a row or column could choose a prize on the lavishly filled prize table. Among other things, I chose a coupon from Sofiona Designs. I did not own a single pattern from this designer.
Afterwards I chose this pattern, the Tide Halter Dress to get started.

Het stofje met de orchideeën ligt letterlijk al jaren in mijn voorraad. Ik kocht hem destijds in de webshop van Le petit lapin rouge. Het is een jersey en in tussentijd is deze ook niet meer beschikbaar.

The fabric with the orchids has literally been in my stock for years. At the time I bought it in the Le petit lapin rouge webshop. It is a jersey and in the meantime it is no longer available.

Ik vind het een tof patroon omdat het over een origineel rug detail beschikt (blijkbaar heb ik daar wel een zwak voor). In het voorpand naai je bovenin twee lusjes, in het achterpand verwerk je twee linten. Die haal je dan door de lusjes vooraan waarna je het in de nek knoopt. Het lijfje is volledig gevoerd. Nadien zet je er nog het rokdeel aan, en klaar is kees!
Ik werkte voor het eerst met een patroon van Sofiona Patterns, en vond dit dit heel goed in elkaar zat. Zowel de foto’s als de tekst vertelden mij alles wat ik moest weten voor dit naai-project.
Aangezien ik slanke dochters heb, koos ik telkens een maat kleiner in de breedte (met andere woorden: ik naaide maat 6 jaar verlengd tot 7 jaar voor mijn 7-jarige, en maat 8 jaar verlengd tot 9 jaar voor mijn 9-jarige). Als ik het nog eens naai, zal ik het lijfje bovenin nog een tikkeltje innemen, want het sluit niet helemaal aan net onder de oksel nu. Al is dat slechts minimaal en zeker niet storend bij deze versies.

I think it is a great pattern because it has an original back detail (apparently I have a weakness for that). In the front you sew two loops at the top, in the back you process two ribbons. You pull those over the shoulders through the loops at the front and tie them in the neck.
The bodice is fully lined. Last thing is putting on the skirt part, and you’re done!
This was the first time working with a pattern from Sofiona Patterns, and thought this was very well put together. Both the photos and the text told me everything I needed to know for this sewing project.
Since I have slim daughters, I chose a size smaller in width (in other words, I sewed size 6 years extended to 7 years for my 7 year old, and size 8 years extended to 9 years in length for my 9 year old). If I sew it again, I will take the bodice in a little more at the top, because it does not fit completely just below the armpit now. Although that is only minimal and certainly not disturbing with these versions.

Striped Solis

Na het naaien van een Solis voor mezelf, wou Hanne er ook graag eentje. En bovendien wou ook een van mijn collega’s het patroon voor dames eens uitproberen. Alleen durfde ze niet goed, omdat ze nog niet echt veel ervaring heeft met naaien.
Geen probleem, aangezien ik me als juf toch moest gaan verdiepen in het werken met instructiefilmpjes, ging ik aan de slag.
Ik maakte filmpjes van het knippen van de patroondelen, en nadien per stapje – beginnend bij het lijfje – een filmpje om alles in elkaar te zetten. Inclusief een rok mét zakken.

After sewing a Solis for myself, Hanne also wanted one. In addition, one of my colleagues also wanted to try out the women’s pattern. But she was doubting, because she does not really have much experience with sewing yet.
No problem, because as a teacher I had to go deeper into working with instructional videos, so I went to work.
I made videos of cutting the pattern parts, and then step by step – starting at the bodice – a movie to put everything together. Including a skirt with pockets.

Leerrijk voor mij als juf, en leuk voor Hanne die opnieuw een kleedje rijker is. 🙂

Educational for me as a teacher, and nice for Hanne who now has an new dress. 🙂

Dit is de versie met cirkelrok, met zakken. Net als de Solis voor dames beschikt dit patroon over een duidelijke handleiding. Ik maakte maat 6 jaar, lengte 7 jaar.
Met die vrolijke streepjes zijn we helemaal klaar om deze zomer een dagje naar zee te gaan, als dat ten minste al opnieuw zal mogen… Maar hij kan natuurlijk ook gewoon aan als het lekker warm is in eigen tuin 🙂

With those cheerful stripes, we are ready for a day at the beach this summer, if that is allowed again … But of course it can also be worn when it is nice and warm in our own garden 🙂
